Much better!

#1: Very nice. Not overboard on the facial smoothing, shadows have an apparent reason to be there. I do see, however, some faint healing brush mottling on her forhead, near cheek and chin. Perhaps because I'm looking for it ( ).

#2: Oops. Her shoulder is in the DOF, her face is out.

Thanks!!! I am learning not only to shoot but to edit as well. So this is what I am looking for. Quick question for you. I tried a shot such as what you displayed on your last response. I had a black background and tried jsut lighitng the models left side, very similar to what you DID accomplish. However, the light was way too strong and lit the entire area. I assume I need a grid of some sort or a smaller soft box....is this an accurate assumption? what was your setup for that shot?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark:

Wile they are different images that your first post I like the color version better. The b/w's lack contrast but do have a wide mid-tone range. They are also a little to warm for a warm tone image and yet not quite sepia toned either. I've found that after desaturating the image and adjusting the curves for contrast that a +5 red and a -5 yellow gives the image a warm toned b/w.

Here's a few examples

Rick D.

Cold tone

Warm tone

The above shot (London, in this thread) was lit with a 1.5'x4' softbox on a B800 set to 1/8 output (I don't remember the meter reading, but you can check the EXIF info if you download it). I could bump the box with my left elbow from the camera position, and had it turned so that it "edged" onto the model but the majority "spilled" (is it really spilled if it's on purpose?) on the background, which was ten feet away, in order to help separate her black wardrobe from the black seamless.
