Does emotion trump technique in a commercial shot? This is from a fashion workshop.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Neither of the shots seem to be a fashion shot. Certainly the 2nd shot can't possibly be considered a fashion shot. Generally in fashion one does not have the model looking at the viewer (although Victoria's Secretes violates this principle).

If you're asking, should the model react with the viewer on an emotional plane in a fashion shot, then I think one would always have to ask why a fashion shot is being made. If it is the sell the clothing, then how much should the model intrude on the viewer's experience with the clothing?

Here are three anti-fashion shots of Renee. Now where are you looking in these photos?

Cheers,
rfs

In all 3 shots my eye went straight to her face, eyes and smile.

Sorry for being confusing. The second shot is beauty I guess. The first was an attempted editorial fashion shot. I was vague because I am uncertain about the hot spot from the window on her hair. I am babbling on about the emotion of the shot not 'getting around the technical defect' in a commercial environment.

I am by no means a pro at this. But I am learning as much as I can.
Here's my take on your pics.
The first one, her expression seems , to me, like shes a bit loopie, like shes saying " did I just fart?" But what really bugs me is her clothes are so wrinkled up. I think with her clothes so wrinkled, and her expression, and her looking right at the camera, makes it more of a snapshot of a pretty girl by a window. Like a pic you'd see in a model's portforio, whos just starting out.

The second pic, NOW THAT's A GREAT PORTRAIT! I LOVE IT! very nice nice nice.
As for fashion though, It doesn't say fashion to me in either of the pics hon. It says to me, these are more about the girl than the clothes.
