Okay, as usual, let me hear your opinions on this image. I've already figured out not to have the model wear a black shirt if she has dark hair, just not enough seperation. Thanks in advanced.

Isaiah,

Be sure your model is the main interest for the viewer's eyes, if it is a portrait. We already covered the busy background of the vines, but a simple improvement, I think, would be a crop to eliminate the trees and grass on the left side. A good rule to think about is to ask yourself if anything in the frame does not add to the purpose of the shot, either blur it out or clone/crop it.

Get her out this afternoon again, shoot late in the day.

Your friend,

Jim

Model is Josefina

I did not mind the people on the beach as I felt like it added color and interest. You expect to see kids having fun next to the shore. The time of day is about 30 minutes prior to sunbset. We did this Saturday.

P.S. It is always nice to add mystery, ambaguity, and or contradition to the image. That was the purpose of the cowgirl/asian combination. Make your viewer stop to wonder about something in your image.

I'd love to shoot her again, but she is extremely diffacult to get in touch with, one of those who dosn't return emails, or phone calls, but no worries. I will take your advice for the next time. Part of it was that I was so excited to get out there, I forgot some of the basics that you have mentioned. I'm still learning, as I will always hope to be doing, no matter how good I become. Thanks Jim.

Which way is the sun facing, or did you use a reflecter? I like how the face is lit, I need to work on that in my pictures.

She was facing the sun, fortunately, there was shade for her eyes, but the only lighting used was a flash, no reflectors, diffusers, softboxes, just straight up Vivitar 52000. Yeah, I like the lighting also. Just curious, what do you think of the background?

Perhaps if you croped it a little on each side it would help the model to stand out a little more.

I still make silly mistakes all the time. Ask any women you think that would look nice to pose. I asked a lady at the camera store today for the 3rd time. She said no the 1st 2 times and I got a maybe today. Get some business cards made that you can give out. I made my own in Photoshop and you never know.

Some time ago I was in a Starbucks in San Diego with my photographer friend Stan, and while I was talking he asked to excuse himself for a minute. He walked over the the young lady at a laptop that was behind me and asked if she would be interested in modeling. Very few say no at this point (except to me) and he gave her his card with his website.

He had been looking at her while talking to me so I said wow. He then said he casts his nets where he can and catches some fish in this manner.

Yeah, I figure, the more people I ask, the better the odds of someone saying yes.
