Which is the better crop for this shot. I know the color isn't right. But should I show some of the crease in the arm, the whole arm, or do you think it is okay with the arm exiting and then coming back into the frame

If you're going to chop the elbow, chop it all (crop #1)...but don't chop her head.

IMO their is nothing wrong with chopping of the top of the head. you see in magazines all the time. Rules of portrait photography dont always have to be followed. But if your going to chop it make sure that is looks like thats what you wanted done. the second photo when printed on 8x10 would be pretty close cutting the top of the head. again thats just my opinion.

I would prefer to see all her head and her elbow but if you don't have all the elbow then crop it the way you have it in #1. I personally like to see all the model's parts unless there is a reason to crop more closely.

regards

mark

I went with a mix more of the arm and more of the head. She came in and I showed her the different crops. I had cut of the edge of the elbow in that shot, and of course that is one she liked. Funny how that works.

I agree with that crop is really to taste, I have never thought it taboo to cut here or there for effect or to help create a feeling, except at the joints which really looks bad IMHO.

again thanks

Thanks for the reply, I liked the closer crop, but I really wish I hadn't cut the elbow in that one. Others I didn't but other things are bad, but, thats why I take more than one shot.

peace

Thanks for the reply, sometime I like just the parts.

But I know what you mean. It never fails I pull the best shots IMO, list the strongest 3 to 5, give them proofs or review all but the complete trash, and people will always pick shots from the othe second or other set. it never fails. Works the same with weddings.
