Hello all I am new to the world of digital photography, though I have long loved being behind a camera. I was lucky enough to have a lovely friend ask to have her pics done in various styles. I welcome all opinions, especially since I have a new shoot with a new model next week. I am working with the most basic of equipment here.

First, welcome to GG!

As for your images, here are my thoughts...to be taken with a grain of salt.

#1 is overexposed, which killed all the details. Her cheeks and legs are just solid white.

#2 is nice, but the horizontal crop feels odd, and I'd prefer to see the rest of her head.

#3 is a good start. Try playing with the levels to get more contrast and you'll have a winner.

#4 is out of focus, too close, and lit too flatly.

Thank you for your comments, BG. Don't worry about "seasoning" my critique with salt - that is what I am here for - to learn. If I wanted someone to say "ooooh pwetty pictures!", I would bring them to my mom - she's always sweet
Glamour photography is new to me. Damn I gotta get a decent lighting setup. A couple of shots that I prefer from that same day with Cara were ones taken during a coffe break before we had set up the flooring with the black drop.

...and yeah, I know I cut off her butt in that pic.
I found one that I didn't freakishly crop her head:

This is my opinion for what it is worth. I agree with BGPhoto on Numbers 1 and 3 and overall on 2, but her gaze down just doesn't capture me like others do. I can't put my finger on it.

I like pic 4. Maybe it is me, but I don't see a focus problem. I like that it shows her beautiful facial features.

The gazing down in the last one in your second set of pics looks a lot better to me. I like the pose on the second one, but from experience I know how easy it is to forget about framing the picture just right.

Welcome to the zoo
#1 as stated earlier is over exposed only on her legs. If the rest of her where exposed the same as her legs it might be an interesting pic.

#2 needs more background seperation (sp?), try using a hair light, although it might just be the monitor I am viewing it on.

#3 same as #1 and #2.

#4 I don't see a problem with the focus. You might have had her turn a little more to the camera to slender her face.

You are off to a good start. Just keep shooting. Practice, practice, practice.

Nice start

I like two and three but you need some lighting for the hair to seperate it from the background.

The third is just not the most flattering angle for her - she is beautiful and you need to find the a better angle to shot her.

If she wants to model she might try putting some emotion into her expressions but otherwise your both on the right track. Keep it up

I also started shooting with whatever i could find on a budget and kept expanding my equipement - still do not have the best but we all start somewhere.
