Thanks.

I've always been a sucker for a close-up crop. The face also isn't centered
which adds to the composition.

The lighting should be moved to a side so not to create such a flat lighting.
It also looks like you used some sort of reflector underneath to lighten up shadows.

My sample has the light between 45 and 90 degrees to the models face.
I should've used a reflector at camera left to lighten the shadows more.

Thank you for the comments. The mostly flat light was chosen because she didn't want to see every wrinkle in her face. In that respect it was farely successful. I did very little retouching. I want to play with higher contrast lighting, but need to find someone to practice on.

I converted to b&w using each channel as a layer and masking them so I got what I wanted from each. (The skin is the red chanel with a green over that at 20% opacity to bring back a little of the texture lost in the red channel and the hair is mostly from the blue channel.

Lighting was a softbox just off center (so I could shoot around the stand) about 3 feet from her face, a silver reflector underneath to bring some light into the shadows under her chin and in her eyes, a silver reflector to her left (which in this case didn't do much) and a light above and behind to her left as a hair light.

I'll process a few more as soon as I have time. She prefers one without her teeth showing in the smile. There are also some with the softbox more to camera left (not as far as yours, maybe 20% or so.)

Thanks again for the comments. I appreciate them. Eventually, I'll get the hang of some of this.
