Evil on-camera flash! Probably the one invention that has done more to harm photography than any other.

To remove or reduce the likelihood of the harsh shadow in this shot (or similar shots) try muting your flash with something opaque (even crumpled paper would help) if it is an on camera flash. If you are using a flash unit, try redirecting the light away from the model (say, straight up, 90 degrees, and bounced off the ceiling). Moving your model away from the wall will also help to reduce the distracting shadow to the model's right.

Beyond that, you can always remove the shadow in PhotoShop and then tweek the color a bit.

Hope this helps.

In my opinion, most people don't care about knees and feet. I suggest going for the personality end of the subject. I hope you don't mind my use of your image for discussion purpose. -Jim

Larry,

Looks like the main light is coming from the right side of the camera and putting shadows to the left of model? Only he knows for sure. -Jim

One thing that would help would be a less busy or disctacting backround IMHO.

Maybe, but it looks like it's just an on-camera flash. If that's not the case, I'd tell him to put the mainlight farther away from the camera, and get an umbrella or something.

Hard to know what he wants since his post is slightly ambiguous. Maybe it's not the shadow he's worried about at all.

You have to use multiple light/flash sources to avoid shadows like this.
