This was my first attempt at shooting gels onto a black background and using a piece of acrylic for a reflection. If you could provide some feedback on how to do it better I would certainly appreciate it.

I was using a flash head with barndoors and a red gel to shine on the background. I had a grid spot on a head to light the model from behind as much as was possible. The main light was coming from a strip box in front of the model. There was a 60" umbrella behind the camera to give some fill.

The model was 6' from the background.

The barndoors and the grid spot are the only light modifiers I have aside from several different sizes of softboxes (broad, strip, couple of octagonals). In this situation I can see that I need several more narrow and controllable sources of light. I just picked up another grid spot and I think some more barn doors are next.

I think the red looks great.

There seems to be a sudden change near the bottom. Maybe a roll in the paper?

I'd clone out the line where the acrylic meets the seamless.

Here's a not so good example of lines getting taken out.

Thanks for the feedback Ron.

You are right, it does look much better with the acrylic line blended out.

I like the lighting on the body, however, the face would look more three-dimensional if it wasn't so evenly lit. Some soft shadows to one side could do the trick.

All in all a great pic.

Hello Flo,

Thanks for the comment. I do find myself erring on the side of doing the flat lighting when trying something new. I will have to work on some shadows the next time I try this.

Thanks again,

Daryl

If you try shooting this at a lower angle you might be able to reduce the line the acrylic creates. Otherwise photoshop the line where that meets the seamless...

Only suggestion I can think of. Nice control otherwise.
