This is a picture I did earlier this year of my room mate. I like it but I know there's things I can improve on. Is there a better way to pose him? Is there too much shadow on the dark side of his face? Would a black stool have been better than the wood one? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the fall off of light from camera right to left is too severe. It's accentuated by the top of the models right brow and right cheek area are visible, yet the eye area is not...almost a black hole...
It appears your light source was camera right...I think for this angle, the light should be to camera left (if that is your desired angle for the shot) OR somehow work some fill onto the models right side...

Also, his shoulders are "scrunched"(??)...as a male he needs to show his masculinity...have him spread them shoulders out and square them up...just be careful and make sure his chin is leading towards the higher shoulder...

I like the shot - it has character and and interesting pose etc.

Try increasing the contrast - IE brighten him and allow the background to remain very dark. This is a great shot but the current result is a little flat and gray for me.

I agree with Bobby. Square him up a little more. It would give him a stronger, ME MAN! ME HUNT! ME IN CHARGE! type look. I'd lose the coat? on his leg. It's distracting and gives more a snap shot feel to it. The image is a little dark for me but that could be my monitor. Someday I'll update this thing!

Other then that....I like the image and he has a powerful look.

Thanks for the comments Kellyg I can really see how the shoulders would give him a stronger look. I did make it a little darker than I normally would have because I wanted the background to not be visible.

And don't worry about not posting an image.

Thanks for the comments Gus. I was going for the dark backround when I lowered the brightness. Didin't even think about increasing the contrast.

BobbyG thanks for the comments. I do need to get some more practice with fill lighting and such, and your comment on his shoulders is dead on.
