Okay, I haven't been around as much as I used to be lately. Got pretty busy, which is a good thing for me I guess... it keeps me outta trouble. I've actually been working on these latest photos, which I'd love to get some critiques on, if you have a minute. The model was my favorite model in the whole world, GG's own Martina, aka Maty. Makeup by Ashley Wood, and a white foamcore panel to the left was held by Tomas.

Okay, the stats: Nikon F4, Kodak E100GX slide film, 70-300mm lens (in another forum I said I used a 28-80mm lens, but I think I just used that for the digitals we shot that day), exposures were probably around f4 - f5.6 @ 1/125, button pusher: me.

I was trying different warmths, saturations, etc., depending on the look of the pose and all, so that's why some look a little different in that way.

You may notice I put my copyright (in which I forgot to put the year ), which I don't normally do as most of you know, but we were getting these ready for the Xposed.com "Is She Hot" contest. Speaking of the contest, since this isn't the contest posting forum, I'm not going to TELL you to go there and vote for Maty, but if you'd like to mosey on over there of your own volition and vote for her (she's in the Top Contestants near the top, you can't miss her ), then that would be mighty kind of you.

I can already see at least one thing that you might comment on, but if you guys could give some advice about these shots, that would be much appreciated!

Thanks much,

Sam

Note: To any of you deviant lurkers out there, the 'Vette's a rental, so trying will get you nowhere. You know what I'm talkin' about.

Sam,

Nice stuff, man, but I do have a couple of (very respectful) slight negatives.

On my monitor the overall focus is just a little soft. Not out, just soft.

I think that by showing only the middle part of the car's butt end you take away the natural interaction between a hot rod and a hot girl. Usually these kind of shots are angled, not straight on, and more of the car is usually in the shot.

Hey, I'm no expert, this is strictly my opinion, but I have looked at my share of bikini clad babes draped over a car --strictly for photographic research-- and it seems to me like you're losing too much of the car.

Final point...the light pattern on the trees in the bg is really distracting. Half light half shadow...a simple brain like mine gets lost.

So send me a nickel and I'll send you back three cents...

Shannon

Hey Shannon, thanks for the comments!

I can see what you're saying about the softness here... I went back and checked the chromes these were scanned from with a loupe, and they seem to be sharp there, though. Maybe the sharpness got lost in the translation?

And I can see what you're saying about showing more car in the shot, too. We did do some where you can see the whole car and some where you only see part of it. Those with the whole car, they were my first attempts at using strobes outside in daylight, and the results were kinda interesting, although not exactly what I was expecting. But anyways, I guess doing a shoot like this is kind of a balancing act with the model and the car. I guess I should read up more on Makes and Models magazine.

As for the trees in the bg, if I burned them down, would that help do you think? (I mean in the image, not the actual trees. )

I'm mailing your nickel now... but are we gonna split the cost of the postage stamp?

Thanks again Shannon!

Hey Sam! I'm liking these and #4 ROCKS ME Of course this is form a newbie perspective But I LOVE Corvettes and Maty is certainly easy on the eyes! Only one nit from this nitwit, watch for the creases in certain.. ahem.. areas of the swim suit Nice stuff dude!

Thanks Rick, 'preciate it! Maty's most definitely easy on the eyes -- she made my job so much easier.

Oh, and if you're thinking about the crease that I'm thinking about (#2), then I did try retouching that area (in Photoshop you pervs!! ), but we decided to leave it the way it was originally 'cause, well, I thought it gave that area a little more definition. However, not just you, but another photographer I respect mentioned the same thing...

Thanks again man! I appreciate you taking the time.

Sam

P.S.: I love Corvettes now, too.

Sam,

Just a few notes on what I see:

The soft look is simply a result of down sizing the image. You need to apply a little USM after reduction, that will restore sharpness lost in sizing. I dropped one of yours into PS, applied 70-1-1 USM and it was fine.

The contrast between the dark trees in the background; the white suit and the rest of the foreground is annoying. This is one of those times where dragging the shutter may have been the way to go. You may have been able to bring up some detail in the background while using the flash to expose the foreground.

In #1 and #4 the model has a hand growing out of her hip.

You may want to shop out the crease in the arm pit area that show up in some of these shots. There are also hot spots on the models face in some of the shots that you may want to fix.

I would also get rid of most of the reflections on the car (very hard to control on a surface like this); they distract the eye from your totally gorgeous model. She will do well in any contest!! I will vote for her!!!

Looks like this was a fun shoot.

Tony

Great shots of the VET ď?Š, a little too much contrast for me overall,. The sunlight is strong and direct and the background and shadows a little too harsh for my liking.
I would have liked to see this shot with a well lit background rather than a fully shaded one.

RE: 1 and 3.
I am not a huge fan of women posing facing directly at the camera as this displays the widest possible waist - and the least possible flattering torso if the shoulders are also facing the camera, but the big issue I have here is the widest possible portion of her thigh is also a part of the pose. She is lean enough to pull it off will limited ill effect but a more fluttering pose would have pointed her right leg toward the camera and possibly rotated the shoulders a little to narrow the waist.

2 I would have UMMM, I would have asked her to straighten her suit at the back so it was symmetrical or even on both sides, and I would have asked her to point her toes forward to again narrow the leg, and taken the shot a little lower to elongate her very fine legs.

3. This shot is the most flattering as her pose has incorporated some of the suggestions i had for the other three sots. Too bad she is not letting us she her beautiful eyes.

Sometimes the waiste and shoulder will both be facing the camera but legs look thinnner whenthe foot poits toward or directly away from the camera.

At Best all that can be said has been. “I will added I Like it Like that
Over all outstanding work, You have come along ways only 3 million or so takes and you have to relearn it all being that we all see things differently, as time moves on.
And that is always good, as for head on or to a side, I say it’s the image makers call, Not what is done by others in the past. I wonder when the first and I mean the first photos of horse less carriage was taken what was the rule then?
Then there are always the brave at hart that challenges the rules what ever one thinks.
But still a big notebook is always great even though we forget what was in the begging as the book get larger.
A job well done and keep up the fine work. Be looking forward in seeing more of your work.
