Here is one I took of my daughter this evening. I was going to use the timer on my camera and take some self portraits to play with my new stobes when my daughter came outside and wanted to help so I ended up shooting her instead. The sun was setting behind some pine trees and one strobe at minum power with an umbrella. Time and time again advice is given here to shoot friends and family to gain experience so here is my daughter. I appreciate any critiques.

Very nice photo and well composed. The background highlights work well with the DOF and compliment the photo. The key light should have been just a little higher to give a more defined nose shaddow. Good catchlights and expression make this a great photo, nevertheless.

cheers,
rfs

Beautiful photograph. I recommend that next time you bracket your flash exposure (not always possible with children). I would have dialed down the power on the flash, in this case it has completely overpowered the ambient light. -2/3 to 1.5 are not rare compensations to achieve a more natural look with flash on camera and still keep the catchlights.

Thanks for the reply. I do have some with the strobe higher but from this angle I couldn't raise it any higher because of a tree branch. I guess I’ll have to get the chain saw out and trim a few branches this weekend. Just kidding of course, my wife would have me sleeping in the dog house. She already thinks I'm out of control.

You give a nice example, thanks again.

Thanks Jose
I didn't know if others would think the flash was to much, unfortunately my source was 600 watts at minimum power and I couldn't dial it down any farther. I guess my next experiment will be what to use to cut the power some more. I know I could move the light farther away but then it won’t be as soft a shadow, or increase from 2.8 to f 4.0 but I like the shallow DOF. I'll keep trying.

Thanks Frank
Yep I'm lucky, both of my girls are great kids. My oldest is 13 and was jealous she couldn’t be out there because she was busy doing Algebra 2 homework. Who says you can’t get a good education in public schools.
