mmmm Im thinking a tighter crop....the background kind of doesnt work in this one for some reason to me.....she looks like that lady that played fraziers wife lilith on cheers..very hot!!...mmm Im having a hard time deciding.on the crop..when I scroll down looking at it...I like when I dont see the shirt/dress or arms at all..just the head and shoulders it makes a nice head shot..
mmm lets see what everyone else has to say....I could learn something here!!
Don.

I personally find the lighting a little flat. It looks like the main and the fill were both about the same intensity. White spot on ear on the left? Cropping below the joint on the arm (and that arm looks a bit awkward because we don't know if its on the hip or just poised in the air. Since its 659 pixels high rather than less than 600 pixels, those of us among the 67% that use 1024 x 768 resolution have to scroll to see it. Maybe that's why GG reduces all photos in your portfolio down to a max height of 600 pixels if it is over than height.

Cheers,
rfs

You guys are killing me. My main light was at metered at f8 and my second light was at f5.6. Any brighter and I think there would be hot spots on her. So where would you crop this. Her hand is on her hip and the other arm is straight down. If I left her hand on her hip the other hand would be chopped off at the wrist.

Usually I look for where the shadow of the nose is in the photo. I really can't tell in your shot, hence the idea that the lights were about of equal intensity. As for the cropping, I would have done that in the camera and with the pose. Shots like this with the elbow behind the body tend to make the arm look thinner and often are difficut to crop later on. Whenever you have the arm posed in the manner of yours, you also see a fold of flesh from the armpit which is something that is nice to avoid for glamour type shots. Keep in mind that this is all subjective and are just suggestions for things you might want to look at and consider.

Here is one example of how I handle cropping of photos where I might need to crop below the elbow. By the way, this one was shot with main at f8 and fill at 5.6. Note the shadow formed by the breast. But the face is facing the main, so is flatter. The light dark light interplay of the shadows (Chiaroscuro) adds to the dimensionality of the photo. Model is Haley. Now I'm not saying this photo is perfect, by the way. There are at least 3 obvious defects, but it does illustrate the point.

Cheers,
rfs

Thank you for the suggestion. I see what you mean about the shadow. I still have some more to process from this shoot, maybe I can find one that illustrates my lighting set up a little better, and try a different crop.

I think there is just a little too much contrast for this image.
I tried softening it by reducing the contrast and felt i got a much more flattering result because the cheak shadows on either side of her nose became less intense. She looks great and I like the photo but a just a bit put off by those shadows or thier intensity.

Thank's Gus,
I think some of my images have been too soft. I was trying to get a more crisp picture. Bill

Bill

I am stuck with this exact same issue every day. I love drama but sometimes it
is at the expense of the models fine features.
