Maybe it's cuz of my usual state of diminished capacity but i can't figure out if you can write a review in the review forum or, if you can, how you do it. so i'll write some stuff here cuz everyone loves a good book review, right?

that's right. this really is a book review. some of you guys read, don't ya?

actually, if you're not much of a reader it's okay cuz this book has lots of pretty pictures and easy to understand diagrams which is why i'm able to review it cuz, even though i haven't actually read it in the traditional sense of "reading it," i've thumbed through it pretty darn completely and paused on almost each page to admire the image and study the diagrams.

okay. here goes.

the book is called, "Photographing People" with a subtitle "Portraits, Fashion, Glamour." It's published by RotoVision and there isn't an actual, single author; rather, it's got a bunch of photographers contributing.

The book is hard-bound with a glossy dustcover. It's in the 8.5" x 11" size range (sorry, i can't find my ruler) and its 303 pages are of fairly heavy, glossy stock. The book's many images are high-resolution color. I paid $24.95 at Barnes & Noble minus my B&N discount cuz, yeah, as cheap as i usually am, I plunked down $25 around christmas-time to buy one of their one-year 10% discount cards which probly means i'm only payin 20% more than I should be rather than 30% more. I guess that's how B&N affords those big stores in pricey locations.

As its title suggests, this book is about photographing people with special focus on three areas or genres: portraiture, fashion, and glamour. what i really liked about this book when i first thumbed it at B&N were the lighting diagrams. these diagrams are easy enough to decipher--even for a dim-wit like me--and i'm thinking that almost any shooter, at any level of skill or experience, is gonna find some new lighting ideas in this book. (except for robert sanders cuz we all know he long-ago attained photo nirvana.)

so, i highly recommend this book. it's easy to digest--even for guys like don--and it's probly got more practical lighting ideas crammed into it then any book i've seen. if you're one of those guys who likes books that are about the cerebral side of photography, you know, like "The Tao of Photography," this might not be your cup-of-tea. but if you're a hands-on kinda guy, like me, you'll probly dig it.

Here's an Amazon link to the book. If you go there you might notice that i got taken by B&N cuz Amazon has the book listed for way less than i paid for it even with my bull****t discount card. Oh well. what's money, right?

I bought this book too and really like it. I look at it every couple of weeks and come up with more ideas. Now if I could just grow a backbone (like jimmyd's! The man has got one hell of a portfolio!) and ask a pretty girl to pose for me, I'd be all set!

I agree with jimmyd. I've had the book for about a month, and I've gone through it more than once. Very good practical advise, excellent coverage of the photos with lighting diagrams and text, etc. And for the price, its hard to pass it up.

Thanks for the review. I had an $20 amazon gift certificate that I just blew off ordering this book. Now for the 5-9 day wait.
