Can someone tell me how to lighten up the bottom of these photos? Would you lighten them up?

There's all kinds of ways to do that but unless you are very well schooled at PS it will look like you messed with them. Shots like this are why I bought a 5' Photek and a 14 x 54 strip box.

I tried several quick techniques to lighten the bottom but each gave me poor results. If you have the time and know Photoshop, you could knock out the background and place her on a lighter background, thus letting her pants and feet show. Or you could do what I always do ... look for what's really interesting in the shot and crop, crop, crop! Sometimes a tight crop is much more interesting than a full body shot. In this shot, I thought the model smoking was way more interesting than her feet, so here's how I would crop it.

You most certainly would want to lighten the bottom of these photos. As it is you have the ancient black on black technique used by spiritualists to create effects during a seance. The solution is to light the backgroud so it will no longer be solid black, or change the models clothing to a light color or use a different lighting technique.
Cheers,
rfs

You could always dupe it and change the blending mode to screen. Then use a gradient map to fade out the top. Fairly easy to fix.

How's something like this?

The main problems were related to the fact that it's a low-res image that's been kinda jpegged to death. Look at the legs from about mid-thigh down -- see how the pin-stripes get muddy from that point on? That's where the darkest parts were in the original image. If you've got a higher-res copy you may be able to eke out some more detail from there. The overall lightening of the image also made the jpg artifacts more noticeable, too.

You got a hi-res copy? It'll give me something to do this evening.

Sam

P.S.: I'm no PS guru by any means, but it kept me busy.

P.P.S: I wasn't even about to tackle the first one... there's just no real detail in those dark tones to work with...

I don't know how far you wanted to go with the lightening. Is this what you were thinking of. [image]http://stenberg.smugmug.com/gallery/542915/1/22700199[/image]

Well that last post to show you what I did didn't help much. I moved the images I adjusted into my portfolio for the day so I could show you and ask if this is what you wanted to do with them.

Well go figure, I'm logged in, but it wont let me pull the pictures up until I log in. [image]http://stenberg.smugmug.com/gallery/542915/1/22703179[/image]
You'll have to go to my portfolio to look at them (sorry)
