First let me clarify the shot. As Duane and I were moving to the upstairs studio for some of the shots previously posted, we noticed the female lighted figures in the background of the photo. There was an art expo at my studio over the weekend and the female lighted images were one of the artists pieces. I asked for permission to shoot Duane with the art piece in the background and she graciously gave permission. Now for the lighting issues. This photo was taken in the lobby of my studio with normal overhead lighting. Due to time constraints I was unable to move my lighting equipment to the lobby, so I adjusted the white balance and grabbed my 420 speedlight to try and capture this image. I made some level and contrast adjustments in PS and resized.

I have looked at this image at least 20 times...half of the time I like it and the other half I don't...your thoughts?? Potential or recycle bin??

I don't think it's worth salvaging. You have good separation between subject and background, but it looks like his head and left hand are floating in a sea of blown out highlights. The upper half (and left side) of the image is really, really hot and I think the light falls off too much below his right arm. (both lower corners). I also don't like the long, vertical crease and accompanying shadow in the shirt (his right torso). The light, being on camera axis, is pretty flat. I don't know if you had room, but I might have tried bouncing the light off of a wall or the ceiling. Overall, I think there's just too much contrast.

It looks like you used on camera flash or something.... maybe have everything a little darker and more of a spot on him with those cool lights in the back..... Your placement is good... you may be able to play around with this in PS and help it out a little......

Thanks Chip...I wish I would have had something to bounce the light off, but the ceilngs in the lobby of my studio are 20, 30...hell they are high!! I'm not liking it much either...I want to like it cuz I think it would have made a great photo...Oh well, we will be shooting again soon...maybe I can get permission and move the art piece INSIDE my studio...I KNOW I can make it work then...LOL

Hello Casey...long time no speak...good to hear from you. I did use an on camera flash...my Speedlite 420. It was kind od an impromptu spur of the moment shot. I did the best I could to save it, but I am leaning toward trashing it...
