My friends apartment is in an old part of Chicago and has this great wooden staircase. It is lit from overhead with a giant skylight which allows for an even and soft light.

The color one didn't get great reviews on another critique site...I was told that she has an insecure appearance and a lack of confidence. She's actually curled up so that I can fit all of her in the frame--it's not a big staircase...

So I worked with B&W a bit, which I think shows more confidence and a sexier side. What are the good and bad of both, and with is the better of the two?

I like the colored photo better. She does appear insecure or to be pouting, nothing wrong with that if that is what you intended to portray. The image is simple. The B/W confuses me. Her downward glance draws my eyes down to her ankle/feet which aren't too attractive in this pose. Also, what is along the right side of the B/W photo I can't identify it, so it adds to the confusion. If you want advice on the exposure there are better experts here then me, but I think that part of the pictures is fine.

The object on the right side of the B&W is the wooden banister of the staircase. I wish I had done something different with her feet in both photos now, but at the time I was concentrating on fitting all of her in the frame.

I like the color image as well. As far as pouting or a look of insecurity, only you and the model know if that were the case. I see a innocent look about her. I know some people do not like to be compared to others in terms of looks, but she reminds me at first glance of Anna Kournikova ( which is a HUGE compliment BTW)...do you see a resemblance??

Thanks for sharing...

I can understand concentrating on one area and missing something else. I can say it hasn't happened to me...today, I haven't taken any photos. As for the feet you might be able crop them out. I used the scroll bar to crop the pictures that way and it seemed to work for me. On the B/W it seemed to capture my attention more. She is looking down but you can't see what she is looking at so it draws my curiosity. I will wait to see what the experts say.

I never thought Kiki resembled anyone until you mentioned it. Now I can clearly see some features that are similar between Kiki and Anna. Both are afterall Eastern Europeans...

I like the color much better. It utilizes the subtle differences between the subject and the background. It is a difficult photograph. The expression is direct and confrontational, while the body language is closed and protected. I think you may have the photographic equivalent of a dicotomy on your hands. The more I look at it, the more I think I just got caught doing something!! I think it is a great photo.

I like the color one also. I thought the insecure look was intentional. If it wasn't then it's a happy accident because it turned out well. I agree that if you play around with some cropping on the second one, you'll get much better results. But I do like the conversion.

Well, if you look at my portfolio, you'll notice a tendency towards b&w. I guess that shows a bias, but I don't hide it. I like both, but guess which one I like more? Anyways, just thought that I'd throw in my 2 cents.
