I see some awesome images on here. But, one of the key things I always look at first our the eyes. Have you ever looked at an image and one of the models eyes are shut slightly and the other is all the way open?

This means comfort. I have worked on many photoshoots helping as well as being the model. When one of the models eyes shut down, something isn't right. Either she is nervous, something is going on in her life etc.

When I see this and I am helping, I always try to pull the model off of the set and chat with her. Normally after that and I get her calmed down, you can notice a big difference in how the eyes are acting.

Anyone else see this when shooting?

I guess you are right...pro models have eyes that look like all the lights are on inside, if you know what I mean.

What do these eyes tell you?

Her eyes look pretty much the same size, which is the key. However, she is looking to the one side too drasticly. This gives too much white to the eyes and not enough pupil. Over all, not bad.

ps: she needs some catch lights as well.

I never really thought about the why, but you bring up an interesting point.

No, I always miss it until afterwards. I gotta start watching for that kind of stuff.

Actually of the myriad of disorders and deficiencies that affect our eyes is one where one eye becomes more dominant that the other. This can based upon physical and emotional conditions result is one eye not maximizing size wise. I have photographed many clients affected with this condition and most are not as affected by trying to 'off camera' relax them as having them close their eyes and concentrate on positive thoughts, then open their eyes on command and trip shutter.

since i'm not a model--and the world is probly truly grateful for that--i don't have to worry about the appearance of my own eyes. but you're 100% right, mikey.

i was blind in one eye for about ten years. just two years ago they were willing to do the surgery to correct and it was successful, altho i have a synthetic lens in that eye. and yeah, i still managed to make a living as a one-eyed camera guy. (we have two ya know... eyes i mean) i still use my left eye to the viewfinder as a result, even tho the ergonomics of most video cameras are right-eye designed.

before my right eye was corrected, the pupil had begun turning to the right, rather dramatically. so it would look like one eye was looking at you and the other was looking away which is why so many people probly didn't trust me. but still to this day, i know there's a lot of difference between the appearance of my two eyes and i suspect there's lots of people out there, for many reasons, who might have problems with theie eyes which cause outward appearance problems with their eyes as you're pointing out, mike.
