I like the color better. It seems to wash out in black and white.

Seems to me that the better one is the one you like better, although I confess that sometimes I work on an image hard enough that it becomes an emotional investment and I have an attachment for what is, I later realize, a less effective image.

My preference is the color version. As said, the sweater kind of blocks up in the conversion to sepia-toned.

As for how to make it better - well, IMO, you might move in a bit - make the model a bit larger portion of the frame - and perhaps move the model off dead-center. I love the drama of your lighting.

i'm voting for #1. would love to see it cropped much tighter. personally, i think when you pose a model's body directly at the camera like this, but then have her head turned away, it makes a subtle statement that says she's disinterested in whatever's happening in front of her. sometimes it works with the same body pose and her head turned to a complete profile, but she's kind of 3/4 turning away here. i know i sound like i'm reading too much into it but, for the most part, i think it usually works better when the model's body is also posed somewhat away from the camera if you're going to have her looking away from it. (at least having her torso "cheating" awa.) just my opinion.

Hi jimmyd,
Thanks for your input and help. Are these any better? The cropping on one and the pose on two, etc.

i don't have to tell you they're better cropped this way. you're looking at them. what do you think?

and now that #1 is cropped this way, it seems more intimate and the pose not as, uhmmm.... unintimate. (is that a word? unintimate? it should be. i used to be married for a long time and it sure seems like that should be a word )

LOL...I think the phrase is intimacy Problems or intimacy essentials. I don't think un-intimacy is a word. I don't know if I'll ever get the cropping right on my photo's. I was told awhile back that I was cropping too close. Now I can see that I'm not cropping enough. I definately like them better this way. Should I get closer to the subject? Maybe I have the same intimacy problem. LOL

Having her arms against her waist makes her waist appear wider. Leave some space between her arms and body to show off her waistline. Also, the black background is not in key with the white top. The eye jumps from black to white. I like the main light coming across her body to pick up detail. I would crop at the waist and tilt the image to camera right to give it some motion. The bottom half of the image doesn't provide much interest. Next time don't let her get so relaxed in the pose. Leaning, reaching, stretching, turning are all more interesting to us and flattering to her than just sitting passively.
