For a first attempt you did pretty good. Nice model. She has beautiful eyes. Try taking another photo of her with less clutter in the background. It can be distracting. Just my opinion. Looking forward to seeing more photos from you on GG.

OK.. I guess I will be first....

1. Welcome to GG.... This is a great place to learn and I am glad you are posting because that is the ONLY way you will really get something out of this....

2. Do you have a camera with manual settings?

3. It looks like to me you are using on camera flash... that's a bad idea if you are... you can get a stand to put your flash on and a sinc cord to trigger it.. any camera shop can tell you what you need pretty cheap.

4. Your background... it's bad... set your camera to f2.8 to f5.6 (better at 2.8) and clean up behind your bed, light some candles and put them back there.... maybe get another flash when you can and put it behind your wife to give some seperation between her and the background....

5. Keep posting... you have a GREAT model... my wife would KILL me if I even took her picture, much less in the bedroom.... She will help you great better a lot faster.....

Hope to see more of your work... thanks....

The first thing I learned here and at Rolando's workshop was to look at the background. Make it one color or get it out of focus. The reason is you want to make the subject, your lovely wife, the thing people focus on in the picture.

Specifically you want them to focus on the eyes. Which you actually do in this picture, but the red eye doesn't do them justice. Getting the flash out of line with the lens and eyes will eliminate that. Either raise it up, or move it to one side.

You've got good composition. And I like the pose. Keep it up.

Nice job for your first time. Several people have already commented on the background so I won't mention it. I did want to point out that a good photo will not look like it's been retouched even if it's been retouched heavily. I can see the retouching in the face and eye's. You have the right idea in smothing out the skin and sharpening the eyes and you will definatly get better with practice.

I highly recomend a book called "The Photoshop CS book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby. It's got all kinds of tips and tricks on retouching. I've learned a ton since buying it.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck and keep posting.
