This is from the GG ws this weekend in Atlanta. Please critique and I also would like some feedback on the catchlight.

Sorry, but I don't care for it at all. I'd rather see a single, larger catchlight.

Without sounding biased, as this was at my workshop, I'll say this on the catchlights--you'll see the same on covers of InStyle magazines about 75% of the time, and they don't bother me. You'll even see those same catchlights on television commercials for the top make-up companies from time to time.

On the actual image, I'd wish the model was just slightly turned more the right (as looking at the image on a monitor), but just a tad. Thanks again for all your hard work, and I hope to see you again, thanks, rg sends! (here's mine, same exacts light, previous workshop, image was published in the Oct. issue of Studio Photography & Design)

I beg to differ with Rolando. I think in this portrait - a very tight headshot - the catchlights are very distracting. You might as well put stars in her eyes or use a neon sign to provide lighting in the studio.

The phtographers for InStyle magazine may use these types of catchlights; however, most of their covers are shot 3/4 length or from the waist up. This distance basically turns these annoying catch lights into specs...

Just my opinion...

Aloha from Hawaii,
Michael

IMHO I think it is that there are only three sides to the catchlighting. That makes it unappealing. If it had a fouth side it would have a better look to it. Notice the catchlighting in Rolando's photo there are four sides to it and looks more balanced.

I love the catchlight. And I do see this or similar ones like triangles and circles in music videos, fashion mags, and commercials. So with all the different opinions it just a matter of personal taste, so I say just go with what you like.

I agree that the 4th bar would have made it more appealing. Here is one with traditional light.

I like the idea of a catch-light ring (circle), the square look just doesn't look right? YMMV

First... the model, and pose I like.

Second... and this is not pointed at you but pointed at the industry in general on these catch lights. I find them very distracting and unnatural. I would much rather see no catch lights at all (like much of Hurrell's work) than the catch lights from strip or ring lights.

I keep reading from all the pros to focus on the eyes. The eyes are what draw you in and I go along with that 100%. So why take a fantastic looking woman and put a reflection in her eyes that is totally unnatural? The first thing I look at in an image is the eyes and here is this strange light pattern looking back at me. I don't get that part of it.

We are trying to capture natural beauty but I know of no light source in nature that casts a light pattern that looks like this.

OK... I'm done now. Back to sorting the shots from the training fire yesterday.
