It doesn't flatter her. I don't think this style is appropriate for women. And you should have moved your main light a bit to camera-right. Too much shadow on the left of her face.

Hi Kurt,

What you did here was use a lighting style that is that of typically used on males, and in the horror industry. Now I bet if you had fully lit the lady's face it probably would have been a slite grin and both her eyes would be full of life etc.
But with the lighting you show, it makes the model look rather psycho in a way.

Now don't take that/this as bad, or a cutdown, If the photo was of the woman's top third of her body or top half an say she was holding a knife out toward the camera, that would be a perfect horror shot.

Had you put a reflector to the right of the model, you would have produced a lighting situation normally used for a male portrait subject.

I like the photo like it is. It just isn't glamourous etc, but it is a good photo.

Perhaps a bit of depth of field issue as well, the nose seems a bit out of focus compared with the rest of the face.

Kurt,

I can't stop looking at the image...

I love it... I like the light and the DOF. I love the black and white.

Maybe MAYBE her eyes are a bit to open... but that has noting to do with the tech of the image. And might take away from the image if they were not so open??? i Dont know

Keep it up... The only reason we make rules it to break them...

i prefer short DOF in most portraits, but in this image i think the DOF is a bit too short. and the point of focus seems more down around her lips and mouth than on her eyes (which dominate the image). i'm also trying to match an emotion with her expression and i'm having a hard time doing that-- i don't think that's a good thing. i like the single-source soft lighting from a dramatic angle, but would have prefered to have seen it fine-tuned so the line down her face separating light and shadow provide more symetry; it seems to be just a bit too much to camera right (the line, not the light source).

on the plus side, the model has an interesting face and i like the crop and framing. the image certainly lends itself to B&W.

Thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it, it's always useful to know how an image strikes others, especially fellow photographers.

Very strong portrait of a woman with a lot of character. Not to everyone's liking I suspect. Probably would be viewed as not suitable for younger women. I personally think there's too much empty space at the bottom - crop it about the level of the bone structures in the chest/neck junction, IMO. I have a little problem with the DOF issue - but I'm not sure whether leaving the tip somewhat unfocussed isn't better than sharp and more prominent.

As always, just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback.

The lighting set-up was determined in this shot largely by the fact that I was using a very large softbox in a room that measures only 7 feet wide by 9 feet long by 8 feet high.

In other words, me, the model, and the softbox barely fit in the room at all, and this was very nearly the only configuration which allowed an unobstructed shot.

The softbox alone took up 30% of the volume of the space.

That said, I appreciate your feedback as useful and will keep your perspective in mind in the future.
