Photo of Snow Lynn. 47mm, 1/100, f/4. I've got a better lens (on advice) and I'm working on some lighting setups. What do you think?

Its a pleasant looking shot, but suffers from cropping problems. You don't generally want to crop below the elbows, but above them. As it is she looks a little like she's leaning out of the photo. Also I think it would be better with her eyes open. Also I believe it needs a curves adjustment as the contrast is a little low and the image is a little darker than I would like.

Cheers,
rfs

Thanks for the feedback. I tried messing with it a bit in PS, but I was not happy with the results with my skills. I end up messing up the skin tones. Yech. See what I mean:

I suppose I should try to reshoot.

I think you've posted shots from this series before. I might be wrong. It looks to me like you've got a warm light source on the left, and a cooler light source on the right. I say this because theres a lot of magenta/blue on the right side of her face (our right), but more red/orange on the left. I think this is causing most of your trouble with this.

The pose isn't bad for a portrait, although I'd crop it closer. Try the main light on the right side, and a little less fill.

Also, as has been said, this is lacking contrast. An easy fix in levels or curves.

Lastly, a longer focal length would generally be better for this. I've got an 85mm lens that works great for this sort of thing.

It ain't the lens that makes great images. Time to buy a good book on lighting and study it. If you don't do that you'll end up blasting away forever. You have to know what to look for before you can know where to improve.

Check out JJ Allen's book on studio lighting. It's been my bible.

Paul

Actually the second shot works better. The cropping is better, but the skin tones may still be a little off. I downloaded your image and did a curves adjustment. Here it is:

But there wasn't much to work with since the image had already been reduced quite a bit.
