Well this is my first attempt at maternity shots. And this is a quick raw conversion, and quick effect so they could see one when we finished shooting.
I think I can recover the hair edge when I do a "real" conversion and will tone down the other effect some. But, I kinda like it as is, and they loved it. I love it when your subject walks up behind you at the computer and says "Wooowww..."

Any comments most welcome. You can reprocess and repost if you like, but I'll be re-doing this one anyway. Suggestionss welcome on "how to". I'm still pretty new at raw stuff.

Thanks for looking,
Wyatt

PS, If you saw my other post regarding using softfrost (I was wanting to make a big ol' softbox for this shoot) etc., I wound up just using my umbrellas, one silver, one white shoot thru, and a little one for back/rim.

Nice shot. I like the feel of the photo. You're right that the hair bleeds into the background. I would recommend a hair light or light to give some definite seperation. Proper background lighting can add a glow to the subject which I think really sells a maternity shot.

Cheers,
rfs

Wyatt,

Nice image! The pose definitely flatters her while showing enough to get the idea of a gravid abdomen.

I'm bothered a bit by the change in the skin tone between the face and the rest of her body... by the time you get down to her legs, they're almost blue when compared ot her arms and face. Might wanna see if you can even that out somehow.

I don't think the softening/blurring is too much... when you look at it, it's obvious that the underlying image is pretty sharp. Nice.

Ya might wanna think about a hairlight next time.. works especially well with a dark-haired subject against a black background.

It's easier with a blonde...

She does need separation from the background, and if you have CS you might try a Shadow/Highlights adjustment right off the bat. Posing for maternity you might also want to have the mom/model focus her eyes on the belly rather than gazing off into the distance. Looks like you've got a few months to experiment!

Thanks for the comments. I did have a light in back kinda, I just missed (notice her left arm). I will do better next time (I hope). This was done with a total of 270ws of light. I need better lights!!!! The softness was OK by me, but the effect I put on did more than add the softness. It is partially responsible for killing what rim light I did get on her hair. There is some there in the original, believe or not...And I will even out the skin tone best I can when I re-do. I worked on another one and tried to do exactly that, but really didn't get yet. Time to go to bed, work on it later.

Thanks again, really nice to have some feedback!

Nice. I think there needs to be a hair light.

Here is my attempt.
