Every Tuesday night I go to a bar called the Loose Moose. We have a friendly get-together of members of the Maine Blues Society and we have an open stage. I bring my camera every week and I shot this one the other night. This is Ed. He plays some hard-core blues...only him, one other acoustic guitar, and one guy with a harmonica. To me, he has the perfect profile and look for this kind of photography. I just wanted to share it with you and get your thoughts on it. Is it good enough for a promo piece or press kit type of photo? I'm just starting to get into doing photos for bands and individual artists and so I'm still on the learning curve for what works. Penny for your thoughts.........

Good day!

Mike

I agree that this could be a great shot...

But as for the marketing side of it...

I would like to see some light on his hands... maybe 3/4 to 1/2 of the amount of light on his face...

I would also like to get a different background. The light behind his head is distracting. Either more light like it all over the place or no light around his head...

Good Luck and have fun...

Just my thoughts on the image,

Here are two concert images of mine... From when I worked at KPNX in Phoenix the Gin Blossoms did a gig on our morning show... I got these

So I was looking at this picture of "Ed" the bluesman, and one of my co-workers wanted to know who took that picture of me!

Scary -- the similarities.....damn

I'd like to see this in b+w with a bit more emphasis on the face and/or the hands.

I like the shot but agree with Ed. I would like to see as a B&W. Nice job

FWIW, I like it. I'd crop out from below his fretting hand at the bottom, and from his ear or the headstock to the right - and darken the background, except the bright light - which is distracting, but probably too difficult to correct realistically, so just leave it. Maybe even crop from the top of his head to the top. Focus on the man and his gee-tar.

Maine Blues Society, eh? Sounds nice. I try to play John Hurt myself. Mostly sound like noise, but it's fun. Got John Hammond on right now, Gary Davis earlier today.

Thanks, John. I'll try some different crops and post them here and hopefully you'll come back and check it out. As far as the lighting goes, this is a raw stage photo with no manipulation in PS. I'm trying to keep these somewhat "pure" but stages offer all sorts of distractions in photos. Back to the drawing board.........

Thanks again.

Thanks, Scott. I'll try converting it to B&W and do some cropping and repost it. Thanks for your thoughts.

Good day!

hehehehe I never thought of him looking like you. In any event, I'm going to try some cropping things and change it to B&W and repost it. Hope you come back and check it out!! Thanks for your thoughts.

Good day!

Hi Chris,

The problem with shooting in a bar with only an on-camera flash (in this case, no flash at all so as to maintain the ambience of the stage lighting) is that I can't control any aspect of the lighting at all. The best I could do was try differing positions and hope to find a good angle. I think this was the best angle and offered me the best light under the circumstances. The light behind his head was a constant source of irritation for me because it was actually a reflection from the spot lights to my right and I couldn't do anything with them. I may just PS the bright light right out of the picture.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Good day!
