Summer near waterfall 1

Summer near waterfall 2

Cara under a gazebo. My parter and I used a reflector,
but wondering if the background is too blown out and picture should be chucked. We took only a few shots, and decided this wasn't a good spot
because of this...

Cara ...shot with Kodak Ulta100 and fill flash, the only roll I shot that day.

Other than shooting at the golden hours, or in overcast...I am pretty clueless outdoors. So suggestions appreciated.

Image 1 - Light on arm bothers me. Just move her back or to the side a little more to keep that hot spot off her arm.

Image 2 - Nothing too technical talk here, I just don't see a purpose.

Image 3 - I think you are underexposed on the subject and you could have shot tighter a little more and just let the background continue to blow out with a correct exposure on the subject. A gazebo makes a great flag or scrim to control middle of the day harsh light but correct metering on the subject and then let the background go ahead and blow out can still create some pleasing results.

Image 4 - Don't think fill flash. Think main light with your flash on this scenerio. Notice the racoon(shadow) eyes and overhead light is just too strong for a fill flash and you just needed to think main light with your flash and let it underexpose your background a little.

Sorry I wasn't there when you shot these....I hope you learned a lot more on Sunday about natural light before you had to leave......

Thanks for the feedback. I will definately put it into practice. Yes, I did get more out of it by watching on Sunday. I was trying to do as little aimless shooting as possible...as that doesnt help improve anything except maybe piss me off enough to stop making stupid mistakes. Watching and figuring out how to correct problems works best for me.

Thanks,
Leah M

1) Left hand. I would make the top side of the hand less conspicuous.

2) The picture looks too candid. At least, there is little or no spill.

3) I would blur the background using a telephoto lens with a wide aperature and set the exposure to the model. I wouldn't want to see detail in the background since its the model who is important. Plus, I would like to get the midtones and shadows on the model. Since it is a color negative film, there would not be much information lost from a bright background. The only bad thing I could think of would be a color shift in the background.

4) Looks like an overcast sky since I don't see hot spots in the background. Use a reflector fill since it is not blindnig and/or put a scrim above her.
