Okay, I *know* that the image isn't as sharp as it should be, and her elbow is doing something weird. So we don't need to go there.

My web diva created this partially desaturated image, and I'm curious to know what people think of the result.

OK, first - please understand that I'm pretty tired of these selectively saturated images in general, and so am not favorably disposed towards this category.

I don't like the yellow sunflowers AND red dress. I think I'd like the dress only, but as it stands the flowers compete too strongly.

Also, the red of the dress has a "halo" that makes it somewhat appear pasted on - especially where the dress contrasts with the garden, less against her arms and legs.

With or without the desaturation/selective coloring, the background is too busy.

She's quite lovely - love the casual atmosphere captured, too. Thanks for sharing.

I think that "halo" thing is an anti-aliasing artifact. She's not a Photoshop expert. (Nor am I, but I think I know what caused that.)

The model is Kate and there are some other pictures of her in my portfolio and on my website: Kate portfolio page. Her *censored* contact number is 59165. She's a real sweetheart and as soon as she recovers from modeling school (I'm not *even* going there) she'll be a great model. Unfortunately, she doesn't consider herself a "glamour" model so I doubt I can get her to sign in here. As soon as I finish doing the pics from the shoot I'm going to try.

I got tired of this technique REAL FAST. Like about the second time I saw one. I guess to some degree it's supposed to look like hand colored work.... If you want it to look like hand colored, print it out on watercolor paper and get a set of Marshall Oils or the new color set from the folks that make SpotPens....

No other comments -- sorry, I dispise the technique that much!

You know, despite what Mr. Rogers and Big Bird have tried to brainwash you into believing, it's *okay* to not like things. It's even okay to *say* you don't like them.

Had you said something along the lines of "only a hack would make a partially desaturated image, you hack," then I might have had a problem with that. (Though as I said, I didn't make it, somebody else did.) That's a personal attack. But you *didn't.* You said you hated the *technique.* That's an esthetic opinion.

So don't be sorry. I'm not sorry. To tell the truth and shame the Serpent, I don't care much for the technique as applied either. I do have a picture in my portfolio where part of it is desaturated and part of it isn't, but it's quite different. (Not my GG portfolio, the model's young and I don't want to post her here even though the pic is quite innocent.) Maybe you wouldn't like that one either. Probably not, in fact. That's fine too.

That's probably way more response than you anticipated, but I just felt like saying it. I do not care for the culture of anti-criticism.

Best,

MW

the technique is the technique (some will like it better than others).... it can work with the right photo depending what your are trying to say with a perception. The only thing I thought when I say this was.... why not all the sunflowers???? I don't think that was the intended meaning.

Greetings! Have you posted this in the PostProduction Forum to see what others could do with it using the same techniques? It would be interesting to find out how each one would handle this photo. I'm in agreement with Galen. It's a technique and if properly and timely applied, would have great impact, in spite of personal esthetic preferences. Who knows, the thing one hates the most, might just compel you to approach the subject differently and creatively.

Thought you'd like to hear from one who doesn't hate the technique. I'd prefer to see a minimalist approach. The red dress and yellow flowers are too much together. I'd have gone for one yellow flower, or just one bunch of the smaller ones closer to ground level. Working with oils, pencils, etc. to achieve handcoloring about as much fun as endless hours breathing darkroom chemicals - use Photoshop. Use it wisely, grasshopper.

Just played around with the filters and artistic sub menus in PS7. Try the watercolor and play around
