I finally have something to post. The model is my wife. We took this the other evening after getting home from dinner.

Taken with an Elan 7E, Supra 400, Manual mode - f5.6 at 1/90, sun about 60% behind the model to her left (about 45 minutes before sunset), 420EX flash set to +1 EV on a stroboframe with the camera. Lense: Tamron 28(?)-200 at 200. Scanned the negative on a Kodak RFS3600 slide/negative scanner into PSCS.

She is wearing absolutely no makeup.

There has been some PS work done to this to make her happier with it as well as some color correction as well as a little adjustment to levels and curves.

Comments, suggestions, etc?

Dan

Here's a second from the other evening. Same camera and flash. Sun was now down below the level of the fence and striaght out to camera left. There is light reflecting from the side of the house camera left and off of a smoke cloud overhead (forest fire in the area.)

Good? Bad? What to change?

It's not a bad image.. crop is fine. Nice smile.

Second image looks like the background is un-natural. Almost like
it doesnt' belong in the photo.

Thanks for the comments. I greatly appreciate them.

I had problems with number 2 (had a couple scratches and a finger print on the negative from the lab) that took a lot of work trying to get out. You're right the background doesn't look right.

I need to get her to let me try some more.

So, is this better?

I cropped close enough to get rid of most of the problems so I didn't have to work over the background so hard.

I guess I'll pop over to the tech forum and ask about getting the colrs more even. The reflected light is a lot yellower than the flash.

Thanks again for the comments.

Yes, that is a lot better. Next time, try a white reflector to the opposite side of the sun and use a slighlty longer exposure and/or wider aperture to reduce the need for fill flash. I think you'll like the results a lot more. You'll probably set your white balance to sunny, but to warm it up, try cloudy.

You are actually standard for someone who posts a first time image that is not 'glamour' or not 'nude'. Which by the way if you watch those who put the (N) after their subject (which is not required) always get more posts because the most lurkers want to see nudes, not help you evaluate your image.

Here is what I see. The model is not 18 and therefore her face shows age. With that said you did what many try to do and that is over light frontally to blow out wrinkles. What it did is render the model lifelessly pale, which in my mind is worse. She has spirit and life and that should come through. Work the lighting to provide contours and then soften the harsh lines in post production if you have access to PS or some other program. I'm not trying to be harsh here but you wanted an opinion. I gave you one and many others have chosen to not say anything.

Showing depth and warmth in the human face for a standard non-glamour image is more important to me.

Thanks Mike. I appreciate the comments.

As soon as I get to go digital, I'll play with the white balance. Unfortunately, without filters, it's a bit harder with film. I can't seem to find the dial for it.

I've been reading here for months soaking up everything I can. Now I want to get out and try more of it.
