Our son flies all over the country and has to keep up with his emails and log into his company website frequently.

He emailed us this morning and said that SWA is testing their first in-flight WiFi, and since his "second home" is one of their planes, he was asked to participate in testing their program.

Since I have not flown commercial in several years, I don't know if other airlines offer this, but it is the first time I ever received an email from someone flying over me at 32,000.

It is all amazing to me.

Cool. It'll be nicer when the cell phone companies ease up a bit and let us use them in flight as well (although it *is* nice to be free of the damn things for a little bit).

It's not the cell companies prohibiting you from using their product inflight - it's the FAA, due to the possibility of interfering with flight safety and navigation equipment onboard the aircraft.

Actually...No...It's the cell phone companies.

Phones have been shown over and over and over again (by the FAA and the NTSB) to not have any effect whatsoever on modern avionics.

The cell phone companies petition the FAA annually to restrict/prohibit cell phone use while in flight because in-flight use would overload their trunks from rapid repeater hops.

A 1996 study commissioned by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration looked at thousands of flight records and failed to find a single instance in which equipment was affected by a wireless phone.

Cant really the actual reason behind this, but have heard that when a plane is flying at that altitude it receives signals from the satellite which assists in providing the setup of internet and Wifi inside the plane...
