Workshop in the Bay Area

I'm going to my first lighting workshop next week. The organizer will have 2 lighting workshops this January. 40 people wanted to attend so they added several more dates until february. I think there's one reason why workshops are in demand in the Bay Area --we rarely get one. And some are making it an opportunity to charge $1,000 a pop for a 3 day workshop which include shooting around downtown SF and a crash course in Photoshop. Booring.
