Have you ever analyzed what goes through your mind when critiquing an image?

Interesting commentary, but I think you stopped too soon. While books have been written on the subject, I still find it interesting to hear (read?) how people I know think about the images they make.
I'll have to watch your blog more frequently.

Ahhhh Im a pretty simple guy(Simpleton) if something doesnt bother me in the first few seconds of viewing the image, I dont spend much time studying them for mistake.
First impression works pretty well for me, if it wows me, why look for errors? if it doesnt wow me, then I look at the image as to why.
I dont dwelve inside my mind to ask myself why, I see things as I do, its a far to scary place inside my mind to be diggin around in there for explanations!

It depends, in part, on the nature of the image itself. To use the image in your blog post as an example, I notice the lines and forms (shadows from the railings are nice) and the depth of the image, as well as the different textures (the building walls vs. the metal luggage cart). This would be all well and good if it were a landscape or an architectural shot. However, there is a pretty girl in the picture, and I simply can't imagine what would posses a woman to go out the door in that top, with the ruffles on the shoulders and those necklaces, with what appears to be a classic, pin-up worthy blue and white polka dot bikini bottom and classically designed, if modern, shoes. It is at that point that everything comes to a screeching halt and I have to force myself past it to notice those other things about the image.

To put the above in context, I have noticed in the last few years that I am often of two minds when looking at images like this. While I notice the things that photographers and critics have a tendency to care about, my perspective usually has more in common with women looking at pictures of women, who generally give little if any weight to any of the six things that you mentioned in your blog.

Is it "real" or contrived? If I look and it seems "real" to me, then I kind of warm up to the photo. If it does not, then I force myself to continue viewing it. (Of course that's assuming the photo is generally good in the technical aspects.)

I guess I react emotionally to the photo first and then begin to critically analyze it. If I don't like it then I probably won't be convinced it has merit. It is like being told that you have to like Jazz music. Either you like it or you don't. I connect with photos in the same way I connect with music.
