When photographing anyone for a portrait, I always, without exception, tell them that white clothing will be the worst choice. I suggest they wear solids and anything but white. I politely explain that white clothing will bring attention to the clothing and if they wish to keep the attention on their face and expression to wear blues, greens, burgundy, mauve, coral....anything except white.

I probably say that 3 to 5 times in the conversation.

So, yesterday I went to a home, and the lady came to the door in a white blouse and white skirt. She was about 5 ft 2 and maybe could loose 25 pounds, but she had on white and tight (rhyme intended, I guess). I will have to use liquify to close the gaps in the front of the blouse. Oh My!
Hubby had on a white shirt. They probably will not like the results as well as if they had just listened.

But what is new? I photograph many high school kids in the summer.. a lot of girls, and they always bring something white, tight, and strapless... well not all of them bring that. Only the short chubby girls bring that.

But now just suppose she showed up in all black...

Black blouse, black skirt, black stockings, black shoes...

Not just black, but light-sucking-up black, black so black no light escapes...

It coulda been worse!

P.S.

As a card carrying member of the American Society to Save Essential Spelling (ASSES), I must point out and protest your use of "loose" to mean to misplace, or to get rid of.

Loose means not constricted or tightly bound, not densely packed, free from restraint, not chaste...etc

Lose is to misplace, to fail to keep, to not win, to set aside, to get rid of... etc.

Please do not lose sight of the proper spelling of lose.

A public service message from ASSES.

In 38 years in photography, I have never seen black clothing that "sucked up" all the light. And when people have dark skin (or not), but especially dark skin, white is the worst think to wear.

About the only black "thing" that can have no detail in a photograph is a Black Lab (dog). At least that has been my experience.

(I have no spell check on this computer (I do on the upstairs one) , so if you find any mispeleld words, they are ther for your enjpyment.) And if you find any errors in grammer, .. likewise.

Surely black material absorbs light while it is a tendency of white and bright material to reflect back light, so i would be suggesting people to go for wearing white....
