I'm not sure where you het those prices from but last time I filled up here in the UK it cost me about £1.20 per litre. At 3.8 litres per US gallon and a 2x exchange rate I make that about $9 per US gallon.

Ok.. that is terrible. My figures are a bit "outdated".. but the prices are rising so fast it is difficult to keep up.

In our area they have gone up every day for over 20 days. What is interesting is that I see a tank truck at a station in the morning, and then the price goes up before noon……after noon the price has gone up again, and later that evening another increase.

They say they don't raise them unless the supplier charges more... but they do not get 2 shipments a day.. they just raise them because they can.

My studio is less than a block from that station and I can see when the truck comes in to fill up the underground tanks.

Well Al, I must point out a minor, ok actually a major correction to your statement, it should read:

Bush = FORMER, PAST TENSE, NO LONGER AN OIL MAN

and lets not forget the money and credit that is turning Americans into Sharecroppers to afford the lifestyle that they have been marketed to believe is the American dream.

Over 90 percent of the check cashing places that appear to be me mom and pop operations are owned by Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and MBNA.

Those same banks flood the barely fiscal with offers for credit including their children in the first days of college.

MBNA wrote the 2004 bankruptcy laws that effectively closed the credit out for the average American but not any corporations.

MBNA was the largest contributor to the Bush campaign in 2004.

So while big business on one hand squeezes the cost basis of Americans it is also driving them into the debt market where they are slaves to debt they can never repay.

Totalitarian consumerism. My phrase. You can use it. lol

My god this is all depressing. I need to go take some pictures.

Well, lobbyists is a totally different story, and I think that you and I can agree, they don't have much of a place in governent, and while I'm sure Bush has taken money from them, any and all politicians regardless of pary affiliation has taken some from some sort of special interest groups. Let's face it, how else can the minority rule in some cases. I could give an example of that here in California, and if you'd like to hear what it is, I'll gladly tell you, via PM, not in an open forum.

First off, the oil embargo from OPEC nations started in 1973 under President Nixon (not Carter, Ben E). The US took swift action at that time to reduce our energy consumption; a National 55 speed limit, year round day light savings was implemented and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards were enacted.

It is very unfortunate that the Bush Administration has done precious little to craft an energy policy. A true leader would have asked the public to conserve. A true leader would have had talks with the auto makers to increase fuel economy standards. A true leader would have given Federal incentives for home owners to add solar and wind options.

There are things that every one of us can do right now to save energy. Fill your tires up, drive 55-60, no jack rabbit starts, hang clothes outside to dry, use energy saving bulbs, etc. Instead of complaining about drilling we should start conserving (it still is supply and demand, right?).

I have been an Exxon share holder for over 25 years. In 2005, the Republican controlled Congress voted to give 60 billion dollars (over 5 years) in tax cuts to the oil and gas companies. Where was the stipulation that those breaks were to be used for alternative energy sources or exploration? If Exxon profits, it should pay its fair share in tax. Exxon-Mobil has made more profit tis quarter than any other company in the history of the world. Lots of talk that we haven't built any new refineries in 30 years. Perhaps, but where were you folks when Exxon bought Mobil and BP bought Amoco. There are been a large scale consolidation of large oil companies so that our supply chain has been restricted. You don't hear about that too often!

The US has not been oil independent since the 1960's and even with additional drilling it would not have a likely impact for years.

Regards,

Coach

Correct.

Nixon69-74
Carter 77-81
Actually there were two oil crisis (s).... One in 1973 (during that time), and again in 1979 (during that time). I was not trying to point a finger at anyone in particular, and just as now there is plenty of blame to go around. I just meant there had been a time when we had to sit in line to purchase gasoline. Interesting.. now that it is over $4 a gallon.. no lines... Seems to be no shortage.. yet..

And now on Interstate 10 many stretches of road have a posted speed limit ot 80 mph! I made a trip down that way last year and drove 80 going east, and 65 coming back. I have decided to drive 60 to 65, no matter what the posted speed limit. Just doing my part.
