One of the most common P2P file-copying/infringing technologies is called Bit Torrent. The technology is used for massive unauthorized copying and transmission of still photos and video, as well as music. P2P newworks are one of the major ways photographers' work is copied and used without their permission, often to the rights owner's great harm. The following website has information on the technology, news on ongoing developments, and offers a free Email subscription to receive news on this technology and especially on the constant worldwide legal developments at networks and users get sued, criminally charged, and shut down. It also has fascinating reportage on how the networks and users try to avoid being caught. Info, signup link at the following URL.

The Luddite of Law informs again.

BitTorrent is in negotiations with major studios for legitimate distribution of product. The fact that corporate America continues to terrorize its market base because it cannot realign itself from its brick and mortar model causes the criminalization of the entire society.

===============

Our colleague "Icuphotography" (sic) is witty and insulting. What a shame that his obvious intelligence and verbal skill is applied to ad hominem attacks, rather than enlightenment.

I am very familiar w/ the cutting edge issues of web-based infringement, as well as P2P file-copying networks. Calling me a "luddite" is simply stupid behavior. Especially since I've been extensively involved in litigation on all sides of these issues.

As far as negotiations, it doesn't change the fact that BitTorrent technology is currently used in various networks for major (purported) infringement. The pattern of "infringe now, sell to big companies later" has been seen before with other P2P networks. A fascinating variant is Google's current policy, in which it (purportedly) allows infringement through YouTube, as a "stick" to force content owners to license their work to Google on Google's terms.

Our colleague's wildly ad hominem attacks on "corporate America," purportedly "terrorizing" its customer base are also without logic. Music owners are moving into electronic distribution, which is a major reason they are upset at seeing P2P file copying networks copying and distributing - for free - what the music owners see as their property.

Our colleague also ignores the fact that photographers are major victims of P2P infringement. The online piracy of still photos long preceded the current issues of music and videos.
