Hi all. I am on a variety of photo sites and I came across this in posting of one of the models looking for work:

***I WILL HAVE A CHAPERONE AT ALL MY SHOOTS***

***I WILL REQUIRE MY EXPENSES AND MY CHAPERONES EXPENSES PAID (IF ASKED TO TRAVEL.)***

My question is not about whether chaperones are good or bad or whether you allow them or not (I do, with some limitations). My question is primarily for those that do allow them.

If a model requires a chaperone at her shoot and she has to travel to shoot with you (assuming it is a paid shoot, though this might relate to expenses only shoots), how would you handle expenses for the chaperone? Would you pay for the chaperone's expenses or would the model be required to do so?

My general feel would be that since it is a convenience to the model and not an essential requirement for the photography, the model would be responsible for the costs.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

David

I have a model friend that was recently requested to travel about 700 miles to do a paid shoot with travel expenses and accomidations taken care of. She will not travel that distance by herself to shoot with someone she doesn't know. If that particular photographer wants her to be there he will pay for the flights of two people. The accomidations will not be anymore than it is for one person. Paying for food will be handled by the model and escort. Or CHAPERONE as you put it.
If that is too much for that photographer to handle then he is welcome find a model closer to his neighborhood.

Is she worth it? If not, then pass on her. I really wonder about the question of value, model verses a photographer, but that is another thread.

I know I would typically say no to the cost of a chaperone. She can drive or fly, so if she wants excess baggage, then she can drive. The hotel doesn't care how many bodies are in the room, so no cost there.

Many "rock stars" have "extras" on their contract for things like costs and green M&M"s, but this is model. She would have to be Christy Brinkley, before I would pay for her chaperone.

This one is a tough call, as it deals with price versus safety.
To me, i would not pay for someone to accompany a model to a shoot.
But a model wanting someone there she knows and trusts, is understandable.
I would simply break it down to her this way, " if you want someone to accompany you, they are more than welcome, as long as they do not interfere with the shoot in any way. BUT I am hiring you and you only, not them. If indeed You want them with you, it's up to you to pay them if they are looking for payment."

NOW if the model is under 18 years old, Okay then a chaperone is required. In that instance i'd have to pay for the expense of a chaperone. But, I wouldn't hire under aged models.

If a model is going to be paid, the model is going to be paid.

Not the escort.

Not that I'm ever in that position, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay for the family's vacation. And she sure as hell will not be booking work with anybody else while she's here on my dime. THAT **** is just WRONG.

I welcome you to grab any of these graphics and use them at your judgement, along with the suggestion that the aforementioned gwp (because she's clearly NOT a model) find a new hobby.

Another way to say it is this:

Your choice to have an escort is your choice.

Your escort's expense is YOUR liability, NOT mine. I'm hiring YOU, not your escort.

(This is of course assuming that this girl is made of such super-awesomeness that you just can't live without shooting her. I dunno about you, but I can live without shooting a LOT of people)

Love the sign. Especially the last part.

Thanks

Well, here's my thoughts on this. Tell her that you will be glad to pay her, the model, the amount that the two of you had agreed upon, not more, not less. Escorts in my book are fine, I don't have a problem with it, but their expenses are not my problem, it's a photoshoot, the chaperone aka escort is not a required part of the shoot, so if they want to come along, they get to pay their own way. Photographer showing up - required Model showing up - required MUA showing up - varies from shoot to shoot but can be required.
