I was wondering if you all could provide me with some insight as to current rates for hiring a model. I have some stuff I just ordered and want to try out. I made contact with a local amateur model and she would like to work with me. I just find her rates a little high in my opinion and was wondering if you all could either confirm or correct me.

She is not a full time professional. She has been doing this for about a year now, part time on the side as the opportunity presents itself. This would be a casual shoot, in a public place, in casual clothes. This is only to work with new gear. Her rate is $75-100 an hour and she wants copies of every photo on a CD, plus the "better ones" after enhancement. Am I the only one who feels this is high?

Woah now, either you live in some alternate universe where models run the photography business, or you've got it completely backwards. Where I come from inexperienced models pay photographers to take their picture. After all, does your mechanic pay you to fix your rardiator? Does your dentist pay you to straighten your kids teeth? You're not only giving away money that should be given to you, but you're setting a terrible president that gives new models a very bad impression of how they should expect the business to work.

I agree with Don 100%. If you pay a model to pose for you the payment is her compensation and she is not entitled to any photos. If she wants any, let her buy them from you.

Also, as has been stated never give any model all of the photos from a shoot under any conditions. You are the photographer and it is your reputation on the line. If you are doing a TFI (Time For Images) shoot for a model only give her the very best ones and then only give them to her at web size (640 x 480 @ 72 DPI).

The Model Release I use for TFI shoots states that the model will receive 'select' images from the shoot and I am the one who does the selecting.

As for pay that is a very touchy subject. Some models think that just because they have been modeling for a while that makes them eligible to ask for a fee which is not necessarily true. A model has to have a look and experience that puts her in demand to ask for and truly earn a fee. Always remember that you get what you pay for. If you are satisfied with the look of a model who is asking $100.00 then pay her; if not move on.

If you have the money you can contact Agencies in your area and try to hire their models. Then your chances of getting a really good model go way up. You can also inquire about test shoots which some Agencies will agree to especially if they have a new model who doesn't have a lot of exposure yet.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

And that goes double for me!

Can't agree more ... when you pay a model, you run the show. Giving her a few completed photos or a tearsheet is considerate, but not mandated.

I figure at the very worst a couple of flyers at a local college could get you a model for around $20 an hour and probably less but I don't know that that would be a model you want to work with.

I think models have a difficult time figuring out, when they are a model vs a client.
