Exposure to the right people at the rigth time with the right look is the key. Models and photographers have been ripped off with the promise of "exposure" for ages. "Give me unlimited rights to use your image. You'll get great exposure."
I have had more than one model I've shot give pix I did of them to some fly-by-night website for free content because the website owner promised "exposure". To who? How? With that crappy design? Oh, I see - you're using the image I took of the model to sell something. So you want to use her talent and mine for your profit in exchange for "exposure".
FHM & Maxim have models send in sexy pix, with no compensation, and assignation of unlimited and perpetual useage rights to the magazines - but they get great "exposure". So what! Exposure doesn't buy wardrobe. It doesn't pay for make up. The only way such "exposure" pays off for the model is if she makes it thru the initial arbitrary voting process.
I have six photos, credited, with my name attached to them, as part of the specials on an internationally released DVD of an award-winning documentary. I got all kinds of "exposure". Want to know how many jobs I got from all of the exposure? None. Want to know how much all of that exposure paid? Not a penny.
Unless a model has the right look in front of the right person at the right time, no amount of exposure is going to make any difference. In fact, too much exposure can reduce a model's marketability with agencies.
How's that for my first G1 post in a long time?
