The photographers I have worked with always laugh at me because I bring a "body bag" of clothes, and additional bag of shoes, my make-up bags, and accessory bags. Then I bring additional things like hats, props, etc...

I may be overkill, but we very rarely are at a loss of something to shoot based on limited wardrobe.

I also typically do my own make-up, so there's usually quite a bit of that with me.

What do you usually bring to a shoot?

Wow, that sounds like alot of stuff. I've recently enlisted some of the girls that I know to model for me. I was wondering what they should bring. Is this typical of your shoots or is there some sort of pre-planned theme before hand to narrow down what you bring?

I always bring that much stuff, because even if it is a preplanned themed shoot, we always end up shooting other stuff also.

It is always helpful to have a list of what the photographer would like as well. I have had lists sent to me by photographers, and I can usually bring just about everything on the list.

I would have to say that I bring my entire closet as well! You just never know what you are going to need, or what may come up during a shoot.
So, usually a duffelbag of clothes, plus clothes on hangers, a duffelbag of shoes, and all my make-up and hair supplies.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheap way to keep things organized when you go to shoots?
For example my clothes - I always end up having to rummidge through my bags to find things, and end up making a mess....
any advice?

One thing that you may want to try is zip lock bags. Did this with zip lock bags that are 15 inches by 12 inches. Fold or stuff the bags, squash to remove the air and close. Takes up less space in the larger bag and you can label whatís in them with a marker. I'm sure there has to be some sort vinyl type of bags that you can buy commercially for this purpose.

that's a great idea for like, lingerie and swimwear - hair and make-up supplies...
you're right - there has to be some sort commercial product out there for this - I think I'll google it!

yup--lots of clothes for different looks. Duffle bag? that's a great idea...hahaha, I feel really silly--I usually show up with a cute little laundry backet full of clothes and some hanger stuff. how embarrassing. tetehehe *blushing*
I try to bring "mix and match" pieces, so that I have just as many outfits but half the clothes.
alot of photogs already have a bajillion props and backgrounds so the only thing I have ever had to bring has been my clothes. Cause the HMU does the make-up and hair, so I dont even have to put any make-up on before I leave the house (which rocks!)
Now when I shoot with my husband, I have to do all the make-up and hair, and wardrobe and come up with ideas for wardrobe....*sigh* hahahah It's way time for me to go to bed...

I always talk with the photographer way in advance before I go to a shoot and just see what type of stuff he's wanting to do... what he's looking for a so forth.. because my portfolio is so diverse and now when I shoot, it's really just up to what the photographer wants... I'm very select now with who I shoot with b/c of my portfolio being as diverse as it is and with the top photographers I've worked with, it's kinda hard to top what I have... but there's always a space to improve, add or so forth...

So now, I just leave it up to the photographer... b/c in the end.... I know I'll end up with something I'll be able to use... that's how I limit my supply of clothing that I bring with me... I'll bring what he's wanting me to and then maybe just a couple other articles of clothing that I thought would be interesting.

As far as what I bring them in... lol I travel everywhere with my suitcase... shoes, straightener, curling iron, clothes, makeup everything That way I'm not having to go back and forth more than once to my car and that way it doesn't feel as ackward when you're entering and leaving the studio.

My advice to any model I am working with is "When in doubt, bring it along."

Just as it is in Murphy's Law of Photography Rule # 7 -- the need for any lens is directly proportional to the distance you parked your car where the lens resides -- there's nothing worse than being on a location and hearing "Oh I have the perfect outfit for this, but it's at home."

And speaking as someone who had the pleasure of working with you AND loading your suitcase (along with two other model's gear) into the back of the SUV -- yours fit into the medium-sized category that day. Don't forget, one of the models (who will remain nameless) had a case the size of a small casket ... hehehe
