Hi Liam,

IMHO
The ideal combination is to have both a good photographer and a good model.
I think what you can do first is to learn how to be a good model. Like go through a lot of the best fashion magazines, to see what those models are doing, how they are posing, what they are doing with their expressions and their bodies. Notice if they look confident, and if they are projecting emotions appropriate to what the photograph is for.
Also, notice the style and qualities of the photograph. You would probably want to be shot by someone who has a good, contemporary style. Someone who can put a strong, illustrative power into images for your portfolio.
Then, once you have a good portfolio of yourself, you can take the next step. That may depend on your location. It could mean visiting modeling agencies.

That's my two cents. I'm sure others here would have more information.
