Words of Wisdom from UK photographer, Tony Sleep, published on his web page. To say I agree with and endorse everything Tony says on this subject would be an understatement.

I lifted Tony's message and pasted it below. Hopefully, he won't mind. He's an English guy, BTW, so the spelling and some of the word usage might seem linguistically un-American. Trust me. You'll still comprehend the gist of it, if not the entire message he's communicating. READ MORE?

Well, if you are going to 'lift' from another then so will I.

I take some umbrage to the following. Perhaps I'm taking this out of context somewhat but with this kind of attitude it's little wonder that the 'hobby' photogs are only too happy to do what they do...

<copy> Supply without payment is, of course, only viable for hobbyist photographers who don't need an income from their photography. They have salaried jobs, pensions or private incomes, or perhaps suicidal romantic tendencies. I do not. They have a selfish attitude to destroying the sustainability of photography as a profession which they call "beating the pro's at their own game". Moreover a byline might appeal to their idiot vanity. <paste>

1) My salaried job, while it does make it easier to afford the 'toys' DOES cut into my 'fun' time. I am not dedicating all of my waking hours to a photographic pursuit so my output is substantially LESS than someone who does this for a living.

2) My diminished output would, in my estimation, hardly put a dent into the greater output of those Pros out there.

3) I WOULD like to say "No Freebies" at least to a level of covering my outlay and a bit more for newer, better 'toys'. But if the Pros think that they are the only ones facing this "Oh can you do this for free" situation, so are the Non-Pros. In today's "Download Movies and Music for FREE" pervesant attitude what makes "Photos for FREE" any different? Don't you think that the Movie and Music people are just as pissed off with getting nothing or little in return for their efforts...Pro or not?

4) I (and I do mean "I" personally) do not have that "beat the Pros at their own game" attitude. If anything I will refer inquiries to the Pros I do know for anything way beyond my capabilities or interest (I !don't! do Weddings). But just as he seems to lump every Non-Pro into a Villianous Money Grabbing gang I could easily say that "Pros are inherently Egotistical Assholes"...which they are not. There are Prima Donnas in both camps. Most of the Pros I know are very approachable and more than willing to share in knowledge and experience. But there are the few who are highly suspicious secretive and generally down right rude to anyone...even to their own 'Ilk'.

5) Idiot Vanity???... Hmmm, makes me wonder about HIS own. "Methinks the Lady doth Protest too much."

I have and still do enjoy the material and information that numerous Pros have and continue to add to this forum. But let us not forget that GG was and still is (as far as I can tell) a Forum to allow Non-Pros to post their Glamour photography and to post their 'calls for help'. If you reread Rolando's statement of intent at the home page as to his vision of what GG is meant to be the focus does seem to be for those of us who make a living in other manners but do this photography for our own enjoyment.

So be a Pro and deal with others not in your world with a Professional attitude.

while all that may be true, when i first read the OPs words before I lifted them and reposted them, i got that he was mostly upset with those who ask for free work, much more so than those who might provide it.

Well then he should have kept to that path. I seem to remember one of the early pioneers of photography only had had the time and money to explore this art form because he was wealthy enough to do so. Not everyone struggles...but most probably do.
