I am looking at doing some images based on fantasy artwork by Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, et. al.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to obtain costumes that would be along these lines.

I am not looking for the stuff they sell at Party City and some of the other "sexy" costume web sites. Those have their place for costume parties and stuff, but they are way too cheesy for what I am trying to do.

Thanks for any help.

There are many places online that sell quality costumes. The problem is finding fantasy costumes of that genera. Most of the time you have to mix and match pieces form several costumes to come up with what you really want. Here are a few I've found online.

A good one here:

Again, it's very hard to find real fantasy costumes. Often some bulk leather and leather laces along with a little imagination and time produce better results then store bought costumes.

In addition to Mark's excellent suggestions, you might check out "Live Action Role Playing"-particularly at any local college or university. I used to have a link to a costume page, but when I google for it now, I get something at "The Costume Page," www.costumepage.org - it may or may not be as useful as the site I recall.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have done some more digging and finally found some places that sell real chain mail and scale armor. Talk about sticker shock. I suppose I could justify a thousand dollars on a single costume if this was for something that was going to yield a monetary benefit.

I tried cutting some scales out of copper flashing last summer, but cutting out all of those scales is just way too time consuming. I already have a full time job and a photography hobby.

I may try my hand at making something from high impact polystyrene and see if I can get a result that is decent.

Look for your clsoest SCA group. (www.sca.org) There may be members who have things you can barrow or who can help you make some of it

Some pre-cut plastic pieces you might be able to use. http://www.plasticlamellar.com/index.htm

Here's a source for links and scales to make your own as well. http://www.theringlord.org/

You might try the armour archive (www.armourarchive.org) for help with making or finding armor bits you cna use as well.

Hope that helps.

Try Community Theaters. They sometimes keep an inventory of costumes and do rent them.
