I was approached by a pro (touring) dancer to have some promo done as she swung thru my state. I quoted her $150 for the shoot and 10 edits. This to me is WAY cheap, but I wanted the gig and didnt want to scare her off with a high quote. She replied... "Would you knock some of the price off per person if I brought another dancer that needed pics?" To top it off, I would have to travel 200 miles to the other side of the state for this.

I counter offered $250 for both girls, 10 edits each and that would include my gas and a nights hotel. Again I thought this was low, but still want this gig. She replied with, "Ill ask the other girl and see what she says."

Im not too high am I? I have 3 Bowens 500 watt lights, so its not like I have some cheap Alien Bees set up. (No offense to you AB shooters) And I have a fair amount of shooting under my belt, just mostly for practice on friends. I need this to get exposure, and a real portfolio other than seniors and weddings.

She has seen my work and must like it if she asked me. What if she says its too high? I already feel like I am just breaking even at this price. I have never led on that I was desperate for the gig either. Think times are that tough for a touring dancer?

Thanks for your input.

"I lose money on every sale, but make it up on volume."

Figuring gas, time, hotel, food and incidentals, you'll be working for free, at best. (Maybe hotels in your area are cheaper than mine, though -- I'd be hard-pressed to find a place under $100/night, unless I shared with bedbugs.)

$150 for ten images is dirt cheap for the client -- she should come into the real world.

If you want to shoot for fun, that's one thing, but there are surely plenty of models near home that won't involve three or four hours of driving each way. And if you want to build your portfolio, is this dancer famous enough to help out? Otherwise she's not going to do much for you.

Just my opinion.

Best,
Mike Smith

You said you are at the break even point. How so?

You said 200 miles to the shoot (I assume that is 400 miles RT), and one night at a hotel.

Hotel $100
Gas, figured on about 20 MPG @ $2.65 per gallon , aprox $60
at least 3 of meals, $30

These are very conservative figures, in my opinion.
Your out of pocket expenses would be $190, which leaves you with $60 over your quote to her.

6 Hours driving time (round trip), and 3 hours to set up, shoot, and repack, which means you have spent 9 hours before you even do any work on the images.

2 hours to do that work and you are at 11 hours time, and that is just under $6 per hour. The minimum wage in Wisconsin is $7.25

I am not sure why you ask if you are too high?

Haven't even considered depreciation on your equipment or auto. You are not at the break even point, you are loosing money. So if you are in it for fun, go for it.

Thanks for the replies. BenE I was pretty much talking about everything but my time.
400 miles X the standard .26 per mile gas and wear and tear is $104. Super 8s here will run $65. 3 meals $30, and a very meager $50 to throw at depreciating equipment.

My profit comes from senior photo shoots and weddings, so its not like I do all my shooting this cheap. I enjoy the "pretty girl shooting" the best, and this is the type of work I would like to eventually be making a fair amount of profit from. To have a shoot that will actually be used by someone for work, other than the local girl that just wants to have some hot pictures of herself goes a long way to cover my time. (For this shoot only) This of course will not be the norm as time goes on. Once I have something like this in my portfolio and I am sure I can pull it off at a top tier professional level, then of course the price goes up.

I was just wanting a couple second opinions to confirm my own thinking that she was getting a great deal. I was just so surprised to have her try and get me cheaper, that I was second guessing if it really was a deal, but yeah... it really is a deal.

I don't know what type of dancer she is, but I bet she
would charge 2 to 4 times minimum for a gig under similar
circumstances. She's just trying to see how low you will
go and she has you pretty low.

IMHO your loosing your *ss on this deal. If you decide to go forward, just be sure you have the money in hand before you drive 200 miles.

I guess the answer to the questions will depend upon whether she uses you or not, but then it will only determine if your fee is too high for her. You stated that you wanted the gig and were knocking off some money for that. What would you normally charge for that? our prices are only too high if we can't justify them to our clients.

"Exotic dancer"?

Be sure to get cash up-front, or chances are she'll try to pay you with a lap dance.
