Can you provide more details about the troubles you're having? How is it awkward?

Have you tried to talk yourself through posing? Have you tried to practice the poses you are suggesting to model(s)?

browse a bunch in books and on the net of other photogs, sketch them roughly in a book, then if your ideas run dry, walk over to your, "Pose book" and take a peak.

Also, bring a random object for the subject to pose with. Eg, binoculars, magnifying glass, telephone.

Steal poses and style elements from W Magazine. It will be a big help.

This is a good idea, I called mine my swipe file. I would tear pages out of cosmo and put them in a folder, then when I needed an idea I would page through until something caught my eye. You can even show it to the model to give here a starting point for posing. But yes, it does get easier with time, and eventually you won't need the swipe file to make it through a shoot.

The problem with tearing pictures straight from a magazine, is you'll end up copying too much, resulting in a fairly un original photo. If you do a bad/rough sketch in between you're copying a bad copy, then you'll have to be more creative in the end. That's how I sometimes roll.

The only trouble with that is my sketches are not only bad, they are more like chiken scratches.. Like this:

mf: I struggle with that, too.

Something I have been trying lately that is a very interesting exercise is to markup the samples from magazine. I take a sharpie and draw lines through the model's
• hips: to get an idea of how she has weight distributed
• shoulders: to see how it affects the fall of the arms
• torso: to understand how that affects the overline of the body.
• legs and arms: to see the lines of the created by them.

I've really started to notice patterns develop (or I'm slowing going insane) as I do this.

I also try to dissect the lighting used on the shots, whether it could be improved.
