Shot with a White Lightning 1600 and a small silver beauty dish with a diffusion panel on it.

Nicely done!

I agree with Doug. Now, I have no experience with beauty dish set ups, but I have one on the top of my wish list. I shoot with mostly umbrellas or softboxes. My questions is about dish size. Would you suggest a small or large dish setup to start with for single models. What I'd really like to find is a beauty dish set up that would work with one of my Nikon SB-800 speed lights but don't know if any are made. Mybe that will be my winter shop project, building one from scratch because I think a dish set up for any portable strobe would make a nice addition to a lighting set up. There are tons of umbrella and softbox systems available, why not a dish system.

I think that a larger one might work better but the one used for this image was homemade from a 13 inch silver cooking bowl. Depending on how handy you are with shop tools it's probably very possible for you to make one for your SB-800 flash. Alien Bee makes two that are 22 inches and there are most likely some from other companies.

Here are a couple images of the one I made. My cost, about $8.

You are like MacGyver for photography. Throw the man into a kitchen with a model and he creates a beauty dish from a common cooking bowl. Outstanding. Was any duct tape required? Also thank you for taking the time to post the descriptive photos.

Got my morning off with some humor today. MacGyver? I doubt that my level of improvising is as good as his but I try. No paperclips or duct tape were used in the making of the beauty dish. Just a Dremel tool and a drill. The whole that was cut was also used as the round disk center section that can be seen in the first picture of the dish. (Cooking bowl) Originally I was looking for a Chinese WOK to make the beauty dish but couldn't find any of those.

Thanks and you're welcome.

Cropping her at the knees is just a little bit bothersome. Try to avoid cropping at a joint. Otherwise, very nice image!
