Jimmy's point about the background are spot on, it you notice the shoes and even the dress almost disappear into the background. You have a very lovely model and a live in one at that! You've already got the battle half won. Natural light is a very good way to start out. The lighting pattern in #2 is very nice. if you notice, the side of her face facing the camera is the shadow side. The side that is being hit directly with the main light is away from the camera. This is a short lighting pattern and is very lovely indeed. Compare that to photo #1 which is a broad lighting pattern. The side of her face directly facing the camera is being hit by the main light. This generally makes the face appear broader then it really is. Ask your wife which one she prefers.
