Please allow me to take a break from posting images of hot babes ... to toot my horn about shooting images of hot babes for a magazine. Today, the SportsPage 2009 Swimsuit Issue hit the newsstands in the Dallas area. In addition to shooting the cover, I shot all the bikini models and the Babe of the Week picture. Click on the link below and you can download the entire issue as a PDF and see all the model.

Special thanks to photographers Ben Humphry and Nathanial Chadwick who assisted me on the cover shot (both found me through GG).

If you don't toot your own horn, someone's gonna use it as a spittoon.

Photomart.

Congrats on getting the gig and the execution of same.

Was this a "real" job with money and everything (don't want to know how much), or one for "exposure"?

Tell us stories about the shoot. How did you land it? What situations did you face? What worked, what didn't and how did you fix it?

Congrats again.

Thanks for all the encouraging words. This was not a "real job" ... it was my "fantasy job!" LOL The magazine has published Swimsuit Issues for several years, and each has had three or four contributing photographers. When they contacted me about contributing, I told them I'd do it if I were the only photographer. At the time, they wanted about 24 models … and had a three week deadline. I convinced them it would be “no problem” and I got the assignment.

Since I was in complete control over what models I submitted, I decided to make the Swimsuit Issue more about “beauty” than about sexy half-naked bikini models. I recruited 25 models that represented a wide variety of looks – 18 to 30 year old; A-cup to DD-cup; blondes, brunettes and redheads; all nationalities …and most importantly (to me), I wanted models that had not been in past Swimsuit Issues, and I definitely didn’t want “professional bikini contest” models. In other words, I wanted the cute girl next door!

Finding models that fit my criteria was actually the easy part … scheduling all of them was a bigger challenge. My first good decision was to not shoot all the models over one weekend. Yes, it meant I would be spending more days shooting, but by spreading the shoots out, I had more time with each model, and I got to shoot at more locations … and not rush the shoots.

Unfortunately, it rained during most of the shoots (sometimes lightly and for only a few minutes … and one time there was a tornado only a mile from where we were shooting) … but all the models were patient and in the end, I loved having clouds in the sky on many of the shoots.

What worked? My SB-800 speedlight! Of the 13 swimsuit images featured in the magazine, I shot 11 with only my SB-800. The cover shot required several strobes, as did the Yucatan ad and the pictures of Brandi and Amanda. All the other images were shot with just my speedlight.

What didn’t work? I shot 25 girls for the Swimsuit Issue, but the bad economy caused a drop in ad revenue so the magazine was forced to reduce the size of the Issue and only feature eleven of the 25 models I shot. I’m sending a handful of edited images to each the 25 models who shot with me so they’ll have something for their efforts.

Overall, it was a great experience … and I got a lot of exposure (as evident by the rise in sales people who now contact me because they saw my name in the publication).
