Hello to everyone,
I am a newbie to the digital world and I am sure like many of you came from a film background. I am excited to get started, but I need to know first if my old Sunpak 544 circa 1987 is safe to use with my Canon40D? I also want to use my Canon with a Novatron 240 stobe kit and my White lightning's. I spoke to Tech support at Can and said my 40D is protected at the PC terminal to 250 volts. That said, should I go ahead and use the old flashes or buy a Wein safe sync just to be on the safe side?

I have heard so much on other sites and figured all of you would be the best to ask. Also, all of your Photos here are so inspiring I only hope to be able to creat such great images. Thanks for the Help!

Hi Earl,

Welcome to digital photography! I'm sure you will find elements that are exciting and new, while others provide a touchstone to your film experience.

I'm still using White Lightning Ultra studio strobes with my digital Nikon without any issue and have for years. I would be very surprised if they affected you Canon in any adverse way. My brother uses Canon but he has updated to Alien Bee studio strobes, albeit they are some of the early models.

I look forward to seeing your work, and good luck!

When I got my first digital camera (Nikon D100) I heard that connecting to my 25 year old Norman Powerpack could damage my camera, so ... I went to eBay and bought some of those cheap Hong Kong wireless triggers ($4.95 + S&H) ... and that was five years ago and all my little cheap wireless triggers (I have five now) are still working great ... with my Norman Powerpack, and my three Alien Bees. Go wireless and you won't go back.

You can get some great images with that Sun Pack off camera by going wireless and be safe to your camera. I use pocket wizards as the range is 1600 feet, American made and you can get them to hook up to a wide range of lighting systems, both on camera flashes, monolights or power packs. You can see examples of this lighting style at www.strobist.com.

Thanks to all of you for the info....I decided it's better to be more safe than sorry and ordered a Wein safe sync to use wth my old Sunpak and also to fire my Novatrons and White lightnings. Thanks again for your help and suggestion.
