A friend has contacted me to see if I would be interested in shooting some posters of the working women of an adult gentlemens club in central Iowa. I have known him since grade school and economically Iowa has gone down some, but not nearly the beating that many other states have taken.

I have not yet sat down with the rest of the management, but my friend was hinting at shooting for free. Several problems I see with this scenario, 1 the use is commercial, 2 I have never gotten inside their venue for free nor ever asked to get in free. I would be responsible for my gear obviously, making sure all images of the girls are up to par, I am sure legal papers to verify that all participants are 18 and over for 2257.

How much should I charge, what things should I consider? Work is work, but I do have to be compensated. I do have a state of Iowa tax license so I am a business deduction.

There are 2 men who travel around Iowa shooting for free and give all of their material away for free to Iowa Nights Magazine or Nightlife etc and the clubs. I feel that is a very poor business decision on their part, but what do I know.

I have a hard time believing any strip club doesnt make a bunch of cash. If they dont make any the girls certainly don't. Its a cash business so figure a lot of cash doesnt make it to the books either. You'd be crazy shooting for free, if its free or nothing screw it move on. You dont see plumbers working for free why should a photography?

I have a friend who shoots the escorts for one of those website that aggregate all that stuff I forget which one. But I would image it would be similar work for similar rate. He charges $200 a look which I consider cheap but he certainly is guy with camera and loves the attention. If all you have to do is turn up a club and shoot them back to back then I guess that would have to be considered.

I've had the pleasure of photography three dancers over 2008. They have become friends so I was enlightened to their business and the dollars they earn. Small clubs a girl will make $1,200 to $2,000 in a week - not including tips. One dancer told me that she made about $20,000 over a two week period (tips included).

So I don't believe they can't afford it. These three gals just wanted shoots for themselves so I charged them only $200.00 each. But if it was for promotional material, then the rate would be $500.00.

Your problem is that you are feeling guilty because this is a friend asking you. I've used friends that were plumbers, electricians, and mechanics. Never was the work "free" - maybe a small "friend" discount.

You'll be treated professionally only if you see your work as being professional. And then it has value to it. Don't be afraid to ask a fair price. What's the worst that can happen? Someone else takes on the responsibility and you still have to pay to go into the club.

Let us know how this ended - with a few phtos maybe (if they end up paying you).

I have used a pricing tool found at the Photographers Index. It is a stock photo pricing structure. I have used this as well as other information while bidding commercial shoots. I figure if an advertiser can buy the image stock I should be in that ball park, unless the images are unique to me. A link to the price guide is found here.

Good luck and it looks like you already have the network connection!

Suposedly the club got themselves into an investigation of alleged minors getting into the club or something. This project has been put on hold.
