I have decided to try my hand at blogging or my mind. I have some questions to make my experience or those that I hope to read my blogging more enjoyable.

1. What are some of the does or don'ts of blogging?

2. Is it a good idea to use the blog to try to stir up business?

3. How often should I post?

4. Are there any topics that I should refrain from if the general public may be viewing my blog. I do live in Iowa which is typically considered conservative.

5. For those that do blog how do you keep things fresh?

I'd like to offer some help:

1. What are some of the does or don'ts of blogging?
"DO" ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT WORDS,
EXAMPLE: YOU WROTE "DOES" BUT I SUSPECT YOU MEANT TO SAY "DO'S"
NEXT, SPELL WORDS CORRECTLY, NOTHING TURNS OFF A READER LIKE MISSPELLED WORDS.
EXAMPLE: YOU WROTE "DON'TS" BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN "DON'T'S"

2. Is it a good idea to use the blog to try to stir up business?
SURE WHY NOT, BUT PEOPLE MAY SEE THIS AS A CHEAP PLOY TO DRUM UP BUSINESS, SO TO THROW THEM OFF, HOW ABOUT BLOGGING ABOUT HOW GREAT OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE? (LIKE ME FOR INSTANCE)

3. How often should I post?
THE SECOND TUESDAY OF EVERY ODD MONTH, UNLESS IT IS A HOLIDAY.

4. Are there any topics that I should refrain from if the general public may be viewing my blog. I do live in Iowa which is typically considered conservative. YES, STAY AWAY FROM IOWAN PIG FARMER JOKES, OH AND IOWAN PIG FARMER'S WIFE JOKES.

5. For those that do blog how do you keep things fresh?
BLOG WHILE NAKED...

HOPE THAT HELPS!

I would agree that with others that indicate that spelling, grammar and punctuation be accurate. Problems there are like stuttering in spoken communication: a great message may lost in the errors.

Some additional insight to consider is the following: http://chrisguillebeau.com/3x5/files...04/279days.pdf

I think there are 2 ways to have a successful blog.

1) Be an inherently interesting person who is very honest. Joe Rogan has an excellent blog. He doesn't hesitate to name names, discuss his drug use, talk about his failure...and more. http://blog.joerogan.net/

or

2) Make an effort to write something that people want to read. Maybe you can write tutorials on your favorite lighting techniques. Or maybe you can interview other photographers about their style and comment on it. You have to have something that others want to read.

I think most where most blogs fail is that the person doing the blog is not particularly interesting or honest and they don't really have anything to say.

I've been blogging (about glamour/tease photography) for about three years now with almost 500 updates posted.

http://prettygirlshooter.blogspot.com

It's tough to keep it fresh. It's rewarding. (Ego-wise, not money-wise.) You need to find your "voice" and stick with it.

After a while, you'll figure out the stuff your readers are most interested in reading about. After that, you'll figure out you don't really care what your readers are interested in reading about and you'll write, instead, for yourself. Hopefully, you'll find writing for yourself, instead of your readers, doesn't necessarily mean people will stop reading... hopefully.

Pictures help. Especially pictures of good-looking chicks with few if any clothes on.
