We met Peter Gowland in 1984, when he and Alice gave a two day seminar at my studio. We visited their studio/home in Santa Monica the following year, and have kept in touch ever since. Peter will be 92 this April, and his wife is …well.. a bit younger. His father was a silent movie actor, Gibson Gowland.

If you want to see some early glamour and other interesting photographs, and read about his long career in photography visit his website at
http://petergowland.com/

We just received an annual (belated) greeting card from them, and they always send a short newsletter to keep everyone updated on the past year.
A sampling of some of the photos they include with their newsletter can be seen at http://petergowland.com/glamour4.html

There are some photographs that date back to 1937, in the War Years section. And some magazine covers from the early 50’s (Early Covers).

When I look at the photogaphs, I realize how far photography has come, and yet, some concepts we think of as new, are really not new at all.

Thanks for the links, I've been a big fan of Peters for many years. I always wanted one of his custom built cameras, but could never afford one.

Just today I was thinking of how he designed his backyard and pool for photography. He had some great ideas.

I stumbled across Peter Gowland's work a couple years ago when the glamour bug bit me.
Simply amazing and much of his work is timeless. Some aspects of excellence never go out of style.

Peter Gowland will always be my favorite photographer! He's the main reason I began attempting glamour. And sorry to make a small correction here, but Peter will be 93 in April. He and his wife are such cool people (I've only had short email correspondences with them, so I really envy you for having met them!)

Don't be sorry. You are correct, he was born in 1916, April 3.

As I sometimes do, I forgot we are already into 2009.

When they were here, it was after the Vanessa Williams photos made the news. I had contacted a local TV station to come out and interview Peter. They spent more time asking his opinion about the Vanessa situation than anything else.

I had the privilege of meeting Peter and Alice Gowland on a 2001 business trip to Los Angeles. They invited me to their home, and we spent over an hour visiting. Peter gave me a tour of his studio and other shooting areas. They autographed one of their books that I brought and a then-recent issue of The Rangefinder that had an article on them.

Peter answered all my questions about a Gowlandflex I recently purchased (and still use!). He told me that my main choice of a Symmar 180 f5.6/315 f12 convertible lens was an ideal choice for that camera.

Peter and Alice were as unpretentious and down-to-earth as you could want. Gracious, hospitable, charming, interesting. They could have been the kindly older couple next door from anywhere in America.

To see Peter's prints, slides, and negatives was a treat. To walk in his studio was delight. To talk with the man who photographed many famous and glamorous people was like being put in touch with the past. (Peter told me that one of the most humble and gracious starlets he ever photographed was ... Jayne Mansfield.) My visit in Peter and Alice's home is a visit I will not forget.
