I was wondering what is a reasonable price to pay for a make-up artist. I recently contacted someone locally and the cost was $200 for 3 looks up to 3 hours. Seems a bit high to me. Just wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks

This depends on their experience/ resume.

Is this person experienced?
Can this person create the makeup look that you need?
Are they accredited? Schooling, belong to MUA group?
Do they have quality consistent work?
Can you negotiate for better rate?
Do they use quality materials? Not all makeup brands are created equal.
Are they artistic to match your needs?

There are a lack of qualified/ quality makeup artists in my opinion. Next you have to define what is a quality makeup artist.

That is very reasonable if the MUA is experienced. My rates are higher then that.

That's a killer rate, especially if the MUA is good.

Thanks for the responses. From the samples I have seen she does a nice job and has worked with a handful of celebrities. Since this will be my first time using a MUA, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing my money away.

A good MUA is worth his/her weight in gold and *really* makes the difference in a shoot.

I guess it also depends what market you are in. In NJ, just outside of NYC, I hire MUAs who also do hair for my shoots at a rate of $100 to $120 for the shoot consisting of 3 looks / 4 hours. I have always been happy with the results. I shop around, and find the best portfolio for the money, not just pay someone what they are asking.

There are MUAs that do weddings in my area that charge $700 to do the makeup for a bride. People charge what they can get, and if you are THAT GOOD, you get what you ask for. Oh, and my wife hired one of those $700 / 1 hour of work on makeup only MUAs when we got married, and yes, I paid for it w/o complaining . If you knew my wife, you would understand why.

Do your research, and compare people's rates.

Just my 2 cents, but what the hell do I know anyway.

In my part of the country (Texas) I pay $150 - $200 for a typical half-day shoot -- 4 looks, makeup only (although most will do some hair styling if asked).
